Recorded live in Europe and The United Kingdom in 1994.
No matter which of Pink Floyd's leaders (Barrett, Waters, Gilmour) is at the controls, the band has always been about grandeur. The epic scale of their psychedelic explorations, the life-altering themes of their recordings, their ground-breaking, conceptual stagings, have all helped in the construction of the group's mythology. And more than any other rock band's, Pink Floyd's myths have endured even as the band and its fans have grown older.
A live double album, PULSE works not only as an extended postcard of 1994's biggest tour, but as the Floyd's myth re-charger. Consider the facts: the release was celebrated with a laser-light show atop the Empire State Building, and the spine of the CD package features a perpetually blinking light. But, as is always the case with Pink Floyd, there is method in their madness. The blinking light harkens back to the heartbeat that is the unifying theme of their classic DARK SIDE OF THE MOON album, which is performed in its entirety on disc two.
Disc one is an approximation of the band's first set, featuring a powerful run through Syd Barrett's "Astronomy Domine" (the definition of late-'60s British psychedelia), as well as a host of songs from 1987's MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON and '94s DIVISION BELL. But the second set is the true keeper of the two. Having made its tour debut on the 25th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, DARK SIDE loses none of its glow when transferred to a live setting. David Gilmour ably handles Roger Waters' vocal parts, and emphasizes instrumental interludes--"On The Run," for instance, sounds like a true precursor to The Orb's ambient noodlings. The radio hits ("Money," "Us and Them," "Brain Damage") are all re-interpreted enough to sound novel, but still retain a comforting familiarity.

Over time, this has become one of my favourite albums. As a rule, I don't go much for compilation albums. However, this double album, taken from a Floyd concert (and happily unflawed sound-wise) has a real life of its own. This remains true even though the tracks are all taken from former albums which I love to listen to all by themselves. Often when you hear a song out of its original album context, you miss the support it derived from the pieces that went with it. This is particularly true of bands like the Moody Blues, who made albums rather than just songs, and it ought to be true of Pink Floyd. Yet "Pulse" works and it works well; I find myself playing it more and more often with real pleasure, even though I have most of the original albums on CD now as well. For me, it has taken its place in the Floyd catalogue and is well worth owning. I wouldn't buy it for the packaging alone, but I have to admit that's impressive also, and somehow typical of the group.

This double live disc ROCKS!!! It rocks in that groovy & mellow kind of way that ONLY a Pink Floyd & Roger Waters fan could appreciate. The sound is PHENOMINAL! The album is produced very well. This is one of those CDs I like to put in the CD player at night while driving down a nice and quiet highway. (Be careful just how COMFORTABLY NUMB you are.) Play it at the appropriate volume and let IT TAKE YOU away. You will feel like you are RIGHT THERE AT THE SHOW. You can actually FEEL the music and energy coming through your speakers. It truly is a wonderful escape to do so. If you had a bad day, just pop in this Pink Floyd CD and forget about the world. Because your getting ready to go on a nice little trip. And nothing else matters when your in the Pink Floyd mode. So don't be a ding-dong! Buy the disc and take your own little trip. PLUS it is an inexpensive little getaway. Try it! You won't be sorry.

P.S. I highly recommend actually going to see this group live. Like the album, it is not just music at a concert. It is an EXPERIENCE! It WILL move you and touch your life!
