Album Notes The incidental music for this 1998 version of PSYCHO is adapted by Danny Elfman from Bernard Herrmann's 1960 score. Producers include: Danny Elfman, Scott Humphrey, Rob Zombie, Howie B., Ethan Johns. Engineers include: Casey McMackin, Goetz, Ethan Johns. Only a director as inventive as Gus Van Sant has enough to ingenuity to pull off a Hitchcock remake. Fortunately for music fans, he's also got the ears (he's a musician himself) to put together a consistently interesting soundtrack. While PSYCHO pays homage to the past by including parts of Bernard Hermann's original score (a la Danny Elfman), the bulk of the soundtrack features contemporary artists from several genres tackling tunes relating to the film's theme. Roots-rock is well represented by James Hall's spare country/folk version of the Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" and Teddy Thompson's (yes, he's Richard's son) take on the twisted country classic that shares its name with the film. More electronic soundscapes are explored by Howie B. ("Once is Not Enough"), the Pet Shop Boys (the unsettling but danceable "Screaming") and Girls Against Boys (the appropriately named "Psycho Future").
Editorial Reviews ...the PSYCHO team seems to think electronica will be the soundtrack music of the next century. Lending the album continuity are spectral trip-hop and drum-and-bass--by newcomers Mono and Lamb and old-schoolers Pet Shop Boys--whose very chilly stillness cuts like a knife... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (01/08/1999)
