  Not Up To Par

With the original I hated the remake of the house..the original house was much more creepy looking from the outside..Also I am not a big Anne Heche Fan the Girl just can't act..Vince Vaugn did a great job though with what he was given...kudos to him! This dvd is a bit misleading when I ordered this I thought it was the original because of the collectors edition comment on the front..I was disappointed that it wasn't the original yet I still rather enjoyed this remake..Marion Crane steals a pile of money and runs away she meets up with Norman Bates and his Mother what happens next is a true testement to the brilliance of Alfred Hitchcock..Though the sexual innuendo in this film did take away from the Norman Bates character alot..I give this film 4 out of 5 bars!

  Trivia nuggets for this movie
Review created: 02/19/09

The exterior motel set was the same one used in the original Psycho (1960). However, the house was a new set constructed directly in front of the old house on the backlot at Universal Studios. On completion of filming, they moved this second house alongside the first for the backlot tour.

Nicole Kidman and 'Drew Barrymore' were considered for the role of Marion. Kidman could not fit it in due to a scheduling conflict and Barrymore was turned down for being too young to star opposite Vince Vaughn.

  Wonderful Remake of a Classic!
Review created: 01/08/09

This movie is an excellent and very well done remake of a classic! Vince Vaughn gives an outstanding performance in an already timeless, brillian role and script. Don't believe other people's negative criticism of this movie and check it out for yourself. In my personal opinion, it was almost better than the original. It is really a must have for any horror movie or Vince Vaughn fan.

A remake that actually stands as tall as the original
Review created: 12/23/07
by:

First off I am not exactly what you would call a big fan of movie remakes. There have been so many bad ones released either in the theatre or on television, with only a few that can actually stand up to the originals - well at least in my opinion. That said, rather than list all of the "bad" movie remakes, I prefer to promote this surprisingly excellent version of the original "Psycho". If you're a Hitchcock fanatic then you more than likely would put the original "Psycho" near the top of your favorite Hitchcock film list (wouldn't you?). Personally I love the original version - a real classic; but I enjoyed the remake so much that I decided to add it to my collection.

Underrated actor Vince Vaughn delivers what I would describe as a very CREEPY performance as the infamous 'Norman Bates'. His portrayal of Bates is no doubt just as disturbing as that of Perkins, but disturbing in a different way. For example, while Perkins portrays Bates as an unnerving, jittery and immensely strange individual, Vaughn's version appears to be more "creepy" as I've already mentioned. Vaughn portrays Bates as a young man who is childlike, a man who is clearly socially and emotionally immature. He also adds a nervous smile to the Bates character, making Bates come across as not only a very private person, but a man who seems to be very uncomfortable around others. His performance is believable and that is crucial to any remake. It's not the first film where Vaughn plays a 'strange' character, but I believe it's his best. Again, it's difficult to adequately compare two talented actors and it probably isn't fair to do so anyway. Perkins was great. Vaughn is great too. Oh, and the other actors in the newer version are terrific as well. However, it is Vaughn's portrayal of Norman Bates that captures and holds the attention of movie viewers.

This is a MUST-SEE film for fans of Vince Vaughn, one of the most talented actors of his generation. As for the Hitchcock fans I would give this film a strong recommendation. Also for the latter, if you can watch this film on it's own merit, with an open mind and without constantly comparing it to the original, you too may be pleasantly surprised!

Vaughn is probably one of the most talented actors of his generation

  Psycho (1999) DVD

I never actually saw the original "Psycho," but I saw this one & really liked it. Vince Vaughn played an excellent Norman Bates, or what I would have expected that character to be like since I haven't seen the original movie. I'm not a big fan of Anne Heche as an actress, so it was definitely nice to have her "elminated" earlier on in the movie.

Overall, this is one of those movies where you either like it or you don't like it. I liked it and I would reccommend it to others.

Good because it's a classic story, but why remake it?
Review created: 11/18/05

Great actors and maintains the exact same feel as the original, slightly more graphic but almost identical (which was intended). I ask, however, why bother remaking such a classic? There is no surpassing what Hitchcock did, however this film still has the same classic music and overall intensity, so it is still worthwhile, but I strongly recommended the original if you want one or the other.
