Two of the ultimate trippy 60's 'hippie' movies
Review created: 06/24/08(updated 06/24/08)
by:

'Psych-Out' is a great film starring Jack Nicholson 2 years before he had his star making appearance in the ultimate Hippie Flick, 'Easy Rider'. This movie was produced by none other than TV's Dick Clark, and it's pretty cool to see character actors like Dean Stockwell and Bruce Dern in this movie. Susan Strasberg is good in the movie, too. The only problem with seeing Jack and Dern playing hippies is that they were in their thirties when they made this film, and it's a stretch to think that they were honest to god hippies. Plus their 'hippie' wigs looked so bad! This is still well worth seeing.
'The Trip' stars Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern, as well a Susan Strasberg again, and is ok, but not as good as 'Psych-Out'. Jack Nicholson wrote the screenplay for 'The Trip', by the way, and he worked with Roger Corman and American International Pictures a LOT during the 50's and 60's. After 1969's 'Easy Rider', he didn't have to work IN B-MOVIES ANYMORE.

Look up Jack's resume on imdb.com and see how many films he wrote the screenplay for. He actually wrote the screenplay for The Monkees 1968 film 'Head', which is another freak-out sort of acid trippy silly film.

I hope that this DVD with the two films on it isn't out of print forever. If you want to see how Haight-Ashbury in San Fran. really was during the peak 'summer of love' time, you need to see 'Psych-Out'.

There are a few extras on the disc with interviews with some of the cast, Dick Clark and the late great Cinematographer, Laszlo Kovacs, who worked on 'Psych-Out', 'Easy Rider' and many many great films.

Check it out.

Peace, baby,....Groovy.

I bought this as a birthday present for my sister. She is into the quirky old movies and stuff with lower budgets and production quality. She absolutely loved this movie and said it was everything she expected of it.

I bought this DVD as a gift for a friend. They enjoyed it very much.
I was disappointed at the condition of the case, it looked newer in the picture but the case was very used, it was scratched where there was once a price tag. It also wasn't shrink wrapped as I thought it would be.
I was just happy that my friend liked it and it's really the thought that counts. I had a little trouble in the payment part because the money order I sent didn't make it and I had to go to the post office and take care of it, so I wound up paying by pay-pal, the seller was satisfied and I left them excellent feedback because he was patient and understood, as soon as I discovered he hadn't received payment, I immediately paid by pay-pal.
I haven't really bought many items from eBay, but I have enjoyed looking for items and have had fun doing so. I have a good record for paying promptly and being a good buyer. I'm glad. Thanks eBay, you guys are great!

Jack Nicholson, Roger Corman, Peter Fonda, Dick Clark

Two Films;
* Psych-Out: A deaf mute runaway attempts to find her brother in the Haight-Ashbury stoner district. With the help of Stoney played by Jack Nicholson, she gets into the drug scene. Will she find her brother or will she get lost in a strange culture she doesn't understand? Also features; Susan Strasberg, and Dean Stockwell.

* The Trip: Peter Fonda plays a Television commercial director, Paul Groves who's life is falling apart. In the middle of a divorce and a career that's going nowhere, he turns to his friend John, played by Bruce Dern. John suggests an LSD trip. Groves agrees and begins a his odyssey. Dennis Hopper makes an appearance saying "man" 36 times in a single speech.

Both films made at the height of the psychedelic era, 1967-68.

Psych-Out was produced by Dick Clark! and directed by Richard Rush. Screenplay by E. Hunter Willett and Betty Ulius.

The Trip was produced and directed by Roger Corman(House of Usher, The Wild Angels).
A well-written, intelligent script by Jack Nicholson!

Corman states in his commentary that he wanted to make a realistic film about LSD and that he actually took a trip to see what it was like before filming.

Two very cool films, though The Trip is the better of the pair.

Both are excellent portrayals of the time. The sound tracks are great and so are the visuals. Some of the acting and story lines are kind of a joke, but overall, if you are into the psychedelic, free-love era of the flower children and Haight Ashbury, you will enjoy these two films. They are just two more necessities in order to feel as close to the sixties and the hippie movement as you possibly can if you didn't have the good fortune of being born in the right time to experience it all yourself.

  60's nostalgia buff. Psych-Out/The Trip.

My Review of these two Movies, Psych-Out/the Trip. Is Okay, not Great but just so-so. They do show lots of scenes from San Franciscos "Haight/Ashbury" Corner and it does a good job to capture the mood of the late 60's but story line fails to hold any interest of the mood of society back then. I was still a kid during this time and the 60's was an incredibly power time of change in America. From what I have been told by Friends of today is that it will take 100 more years before the impact of the 60's will actually be known.

You can't NOT watch this all time classic!

This movie is a little cheezy in some parts, but Jack Nickelson is great as always with the unusual comments thrown in. He makes a good stoner! Now the soundtrack is all-time the greatest! It has Strawberry Alarm Clock with a lot of really cool psychodelic rarities by them. Also, the Seeds do a really cool rarity during the movie. Trust me, if you like the psychedelic sixties music, you have to have this film.
