I vaguely remembered this when it was broadcast in syndication here in the US, and the memories were fond enough that I decided to purchase it when I saw it on eBay. I'm glad I did. Robert Vaughn is very enjoyable as Harry Rule, the leader of the Protectors; he's a little older now than when he was in The Man from UNCLE, but that doesn't matter one bit. He's tough and cool and isn't afraid to do what needs to be done. Tony Anholt (Space:1999) is in this as well, and I have to admit he's the one I remembered best. He plays Paul Buchet, and he has the most adorable French accent! It's a pity he's not in it more, but the episodes he fronts are really, really good. The only character I had a problem with was the female lead, Nyree Dawn Porter, and it wasn't because she wasn't a good actress...she was. It was in the uneven way the writers would choose to portray her character: in one episode, she'd be kicking butt right beside Harry; the next, she'd be bawling her eyes out over a situation that shouldn't have caused that sort of reaction in such a strong person. It didn't make sense at all to me; it was like she was bi-polar or something! It was decidedly odd.

But, this was still quite the enjoyable series, and it would have been interesting to see what they would have done if it had continued.

The Protectors - Complete Season 1
Review created: 07/23/09(updated 07/23/09)

This early 1970s British drama ran for 2 seasons only. Each episode is 1/2 hour in length so the stories move rather quickly (sometimes not allowing for much plot detail). This set is well worth getting simply to see Robert Vaughn in a post Napoleon Solo man from U.N.C.L.E. role. He plays a stylish British private detective who leads of a team of three in solving various clients' problems. Look for ex-James Bond supporting actors making an appearance like Vladek Sheybal (From Russia with Love) and Robert Brown (minister and M in many of the later Bond films). The set reminds me rather of The Saint series in its quality. I bought it for a rather cheap price and it is a good time waster that doesn't take itself too seriously. Check it out if you can pick it up for about $10 - that's what I paid and I'm not disappointed.

The Protectors, Season 1 - a pleasant surprise
Review created: 06/18/08

I’d never heard of this show before, but being by Gerry Anderson and Starring Robert Vaughn, I thought I’d give it a try. And it was a good buy!

Judging by the synopsis, I would have thought this was a one hour show, but it is actually a half hour program. It starts fast, runs fast and ends fast. They pack quite a bit of action into that half hour. I’ve not seen many shows of that format.

Robert Vaughn’s hair is just beginning to go gray in this one but it doesn’t take anything away from his usual charm. He plays no nonsense Harry Rule, member of the prestigious Protector Agency.

This International Detective Affiliation has agents all over Europe and specializes in difficult and/or high profile cases. Harry Rule in London, the Contessa di Contini (Nyree Dawn Porter) in Rome and Paul Buchet (Tony Anholt) in Paris are three of its top operatives.

Tho each is based in a different major city, they jet all over Europe to solve cases, recover stolen goods or protect important clients, sometimes recruiting other protectors to aid in accomplishing their task.

Well worth a look…
