Synopsis
In Rory Stewart's THE PLACES IN BETWEEN, the biographical account of the author's fascinating (and potentially suicidal) solo trek across Afghanistan in 2002, he promises his mother that if he survives he'll come home and stay out of danger. It turns out he lied, because in 2003 Stewart moved to Iraq to become a diplomat and administrator in Iraqi provinces rife with sectarian and clannish warfare. While there he encountered the titular Prince of the Marshes, aka Karim Mahoud Hattab, a Shiite guerrilla warlord whose harassment of Saddam Hussein (prior to the U.S. invasion) had led Saddam to drain the swamplands. By 2003, Hattab is something of a military celebrity, but Stewart begins to realize that the "hero" has a darker side, administering savage justice, and jostling for a chance to destroy his enemies. This account, told in Stewart's typically illuminating style, reveals the true complexity of the Iraqi clan loyalty, and hints at the civil strife that seems destined to overwhelm the newly liberated country.

Publisher's Note
Recounts how the author, a British diplomat, was named deputy governor of Amarah and Nasiriya in southern Iraq at the end of 2003, an appointment during which he negotiated hostage releases, held elections, and worked to organize a social infrastructure for millions of beleaguered Iraqi citizens.

Industry Reviews
"THE PRINCE OF THE MARSHES] is [Rory Stewart's] rueful, richly detailed, often harrowing account of his yearlong efforts to build a new civil society from the ruins of the old Iraq."
(07/28/2006)

"Stewart is a fearless reporter and smart observer of Islamic culture."
(08/04/2006)

"Stewart's accounts of his attempts to placate the various local figures who continually threaten to kill each other, or him, is both shrewd and self-deprecating."
(08/07/2006)

"Rory Stewart, a young British diplomat who helped to administer two provinces in southern Iraq for the U.S.-led occupation government, vividly depicts this chaotic world in his important and instructive new book."
(08/20/2006)

"[Stewart] is...in the tradition of the best kind of imperial civil servant, with a strong dose of realism, and an enormous curiosity about, and sympathy with, non-Western cultures. These qualities combine to make THE PRINCE OF THE MARSHES one of the most valuable books to have come out of the Iraqi quagmire."
