Synopsis In this book, Rey Chow examines the contemporary Chinese films that have captured the fascination of audiences around the world. Chow argues that Chinese film belongs to the history of the transformation of sign systems--from the written word to the technologized visual image--which is concomitant with the history of modernity, but which has always been repressed.
