A must have, but not for SNES
Review created: 02/07/09

"Primal Rage" was a game designed to bridge the gap between standard fighting games like "Street Fighter" and more the advanced and controversially graphic fighting games like "Mortal Kombat". First released into arcades around 1994, "Primal Rage" was clever, entertaining, user friendly, and slightly taboo. Although the characteristics and personalities of the fighters were an obvious rip-off from "Mortal Kombat", the moves were easier to execute and special moves were accomplished through simple button combinations rather than complex sequences of perfectly timed codes. The novelty of giant beasts battling for control of the world while collecting human worshipers was new to the fighting game genre, and rather than a simple life-bar at the top of the screen each beast had a rapidly pumping heart and artery that exploded upon defeat. Gone were the wimpy sounding narrators who declared "fight" at the beginning of each round, "Primal Rage" featured a dark demonic sounding voice that churned from deep within the machine that uttered the word "RAGE" to start the battle. The graphics were up to par with the best games of the time and parents cringed at the sight of their child performing a toxic fart or a golden shower to finish off an opponent. All in all, an addicting game that offered plenty of challenge and entertainment.

The problem arose when the arcade game was crunched down to fit into small cartridges for 16bit consoles. Smaller ports like the SNES simply couldn't handle all the tech of the arcade version and so a dramatically scaled down version was created to fit. Unfortunately, all that was left on the SNES version was poor audio, censored moves, slow reaction, and badly distorted graphics. Essentially it's still the same game, however "Primal Rage" for SNES is nowhere near the experience it was at the arcade. Oddly enough, even the SEGA Genesis version of the game looks and plays better that the SNES version. From experience the only platform that offered a close comparison to the arcade was the 3DO(a 32bit system).

"Primal Rage" is still a must have game for anyone who grew up within the era of 16bit consoles. I purchased the SNES version to play on my RetoDuo which plays NES & SNES games, but now I think I'll just replace it with a SEGA version when I buy a console that plays that format.

I love this game. I mean how many games have dinosaurs fighting and to win you have to make their heart explode?? only one.

  Primal FUN!!!!

This game takes me back to those "I'm out the school into the mall arcade" days. It's not the Best of them but the Fun Factor alone and the sound is enough to make this, at this price and exceptional purchase. A must have for Snes games collectors. You'll have fun having "Super Nintendo Game Madness Parties" as I have done.

I had fast service, it was cheap, and it was in great condition. Fun super nintendo game. It is more of a male game than for girls, but its fun to play old school games from time to time.

  PRIMAL RAGE--SNES

The thing that I like the most about this game is the finishing moves. I grew up playing a lot of Mortal Kombat and this game brings its own kind of theme to the table. Not too many characters to choose from, but that'll be made up by the way the moves are performed. It seems like there's a variety of button combinations you must do in order to do a special move. Overall, it's a fun game. The graphics are a little choppy, but it plays pretty smoothe.

  Game in bad condition.

I bought this game from the seller. The game, Primal Rage for Super Nintendo, does not work. It starts up and you are able to select characters to fight with. But short after that, the game freezes. If you try to restart the game, the same exact thing happens. Every once in awhile the game might let you finish a round of fighting but it will freeze without fail. The promised me that it was tested and in good condition, but I don't believe that.

I loved the game. It worked great. The game was a little beat up, but it was excellent for the money I paid for it. I bought it because I remember the game from years ago, and I wanted to play it again.

A Primal flaw ruins this game
Review created: 08/25/05

Pros:
Graphics, Sound, basic game engine

Cons:
The special moves don't work!

Primal Rage was really an obvious game for me to love as a kid. I adored Godzilla movies, and was mostly reared on the 60s and 70s entries into the series, which saw all manner of Dinosaurs, prehistoric throwbacks and other monsters slugging it out in combat. Primal Rage not only took giant dinosaur styled monsters with unique abilities, but it also combined them with a fighting game engine. This combined another of my passions, as games like Streetfighter 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 have always been stonewall favourites of mine. I remember my first experience with the game was in an arcade...
