Pride and Prejudice (DVD, 2004)

I am a great "Pride and Prejudice" fan and have seen about 5 versions of it and enjoyed them all. This one, however, was a struggle to really get into because Mr. Darcy is so stiff and severe for so long. I thought he and most of the actors were poorly directed, at times I felt I was watching a neighborhood play production. If you're an Austen fan you might want to see this anyway, but if you're not, this isn't going to make you one.

Faye Weldon's script is so true to the actual text that the book truly comes alive in this version. The characters are splendid all around - Elizabeth, Darcy, Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine, but most especially Mr. and Mrs. Bennett. One only realizes how good the latter two are when one watches the versions that came after this one. This is easily the best production by a mile of what Anthony Trollope called the greatest novel written in the English language.

I found this version to be somewhat tedious at times. The character development was better for some than others. My favorite characters in this one were Mr. Collins, Jane Bennet, Mrs. Bennet and Lady Catherine. The rest seemed to try too hard at being just one emotion for each scene.

The style of movie making is different than typical modern movies, which is fine. This version appears more like a theatre skit being taped and put onto the screen, for the indoor scenes anyways.

I found it to be mostly true to the book. (I don't recall Kitty coughing all the time in the actual story.)

If you are a fan of Jane Austen this version is worth watching. If you are looking to compare to the most recent Hollywood version you will not care for this one.

This is a great version of Pride and Prejudice. The characters are well developed and the story easy to follow. It is easy to see why Mr. Darcy falls for Elizabeth - she is enchanting. He also mellows around her and although still quite proper, shows his emotion at meeting this woman who changes him for the better. A true romantic story for a rainy afternoon.

One of my nost favourite movies and it is great to have one at home to watch it anytime I want. A definitely a great movie.

I LIKE THE CLASSICS AND THAT IS WHY I PURCHASED THIS MOVIE. I ALSO LIKE THE WAY THIS PARTICULAR MOVIE WAS DONE.

It may follow the story line fine, but it is very slow and boring compared to other versions. Although probably just as historically accurate, I don't like the costumes as well. It is also filmed in a way that makes the indoor scenes seem like you are watching a play and the outdoor scenes like you are watching a movie. The incongruity is annoying and adds an unevenness to the production.

My teenage and older girls and I love this movie and the book. Jane Austen wrote with color and vivacity. Her characters are real with their quirks, morals, vices, etc. while granting us a look into her day with humor. My youngest daughter is currently reading the book for literature so we bought this DVD so we could see how closely it follows the book. There are some direct quotes, and although it must combine scenes and alter the story somewhat, it appears to be fairly accurate. We thoroughly enjoy the story and the values it represents. What a refreshing thing to read of a time when manners meant something, were highly valued, and respect for one another and one another's reputations was honored. I think everyone should see this.

The movie stays with the plot of the book (good), but has no vitality. Basically, there is little acting going on and it's really hard for the audience to connect with the characters. It wasn't convincing, and was more tedious than anything else. I would recommend a different version of Pride and Prejudice if you want to get a feel for the story.

I tried to get my wife the DVD that she requested, but I mistook this DVD with another BBC DVD. She much prefers the other rendition of this Jane Austin book made into movie. She wants me to sale this DVD on ebay because she does not like this movie at all.

Some viewers are totally clueless! The PBS version is far and away the best version of this movie. I have them all and the others are just movies. This is a work of art. Lee

When this movie first came out, my husband and I observed it was true to the book, which we truly loved. Even with all the other versions now out, we consider this one to be superior in many ways. We especially like the casting of Elizabeth and Darcy.

We were looking for the originalversion of Anne of Green Gables. Found it on EBay, ordered it from an Australian Seller. It cam expeditiously, was exactly what we wanted. The price was fair.

This version is not a movie it's a play, and didn't enjoy the acting at all. Very contrived. Still love the 1995 version with Colin Firth.

Beautiful film. Gives a strong feeling of the early 19th. century. The girl who plays Elizabeth is much better than the more recent version. The cast is generally excellent except for Darcy who is a bit too stiff.

First I saw the A&E version, then the version with Keira Knightly, then the version with Greer Garson. I found this version on eBay and knew I had to see it, so I checked it out at the library. The first few minutes I thought were very different because it was presented more like a play (for I hadn't seen any other older BBC versions before this), but after watching it a little longer I began to like it! Now I am absolutely avid about it, and it has become my absolute favorite version of this Jane Austen classic!!! It is also very clean yet I hear still stands close to the book in many ways, so that is a nice part about it as well!! Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul are wonderful as Lizzy and Darcy, and Irene Richard (Elinore in BBC's 1981 Sense and Sensibility) also stars in this all time classic!!! I have also seen all four versions and found this to be the cleanest most well done version of them all (even compared to the A&E version)!! I own it on dvd now!!

Love this dvd. Ome of my favorite movies. No matter how many times I see it I enjoy it every time.

Compared to the pbs version with Colin Firth, and the latest with Keira Knightly, the quality of this was quite poor. The filming was what was bad, it looked like a soap opera, with really bad lighting. It followed the script very well, and if someone is looking for accuracy and you want to also enjoy what you're looking at, go with the newer Colin Firth version!

Despite the fact that this is listed as a 2004 DVD it is actually a 1985 BBC TV version of Jane Austen's masterpiece.

There are many versions against which this version can be compared, but when we consider the viewing time (this version is shorter than most), faithfulness to the original, the photography, and the acting, (Elizabeth Garvie is wonderful as Eliabeth Bennett, and the whole cast is excellent, although David Rintoul's Darcy does take a little getting used to) this version is right at or close to the top.

this adaptation, though not like the one and only p&p pf mr colin-darcy, is still very good, correct according to the book and with delightful english

I have never seen Jane Austin’s novels played out in mini serious, but I defiantly liked it. I haven’t ready the book, but heard allot about it and have seen other “Pride & Prejudice” movies. This mini-series has portrayed all the little details of the novel, and in a length of the episodes allot of details were grasped that were not in the other movies I’ve seen.

I don't know what I like, love, or dislike about this product. I never received it. So I guess I am out that money.
