A Price Above Rubies (DVD, 2000)

This story is about an independent and talented young woman living in ultra-orthodox Jewish society. Gradually, she finds the courage to be the person she wants to be, with the help of a Puerto Rican artist she meets in the course of her work. This film shows some of the charm, but more of the challenges of a community with a tightly defined prosciption for life. Interspersed amidst her struggles with herself are visitations by her brother, who died as a child, and by a mystical figure stepped out of the pages of Jewish folk-tales. Rene Zellweiger acts with her eyes and her voice and her body language in this restrained role.
