The Prestige

This film is an absolute masterpiece. Filled with stunning performances, beautiful scenery, amazing tricks and effects, and enough twists and turns to keep a pretzel maker busy for years.

Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors, same goes for Michael Caine, and both are absolutely marvelous in this movie. Hugh Jackman is incredible as well.

Just like The Illusionist, The Prestige takes you breath away. Amazing movie to be enjoyed by everybody.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Worth buying?: Definitely.

Excellent Movie... Altho It Resembles Another Movie... by the name of 'The Illusionist', a similar movie.

However this one has Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale with Michael Caine !

My wife can usually guess the plot twists, but the ending to this one had even her fooled!

Between magic and science this movie had all kinds of twists and turns as Hugh's character and Christian's character kept upcoming one another as magicians.

It is a long movie, but not that you would notice, as the plot is very good, the characterization is excellent, the cast is superior, and it even includes the scientist Tesla who was in direct competition with Thomas Edison at the beginning of the 1900's !!

Excellent rental movie, and one for the Film Library of those that collect either Hugh Jackman's or Michael Caine's works!

This was the best movie I have seen in at least the past two years. Most movies have me leave the theater feeling like I wasted 8 dollars or so. So many movies lately have left me feeling like I wasted away precious hors of my life that could have been spent doing better things. Yet this movie was truly a masterpiece and kept me guessing the whole time. The acting was superb and so was the plot. I usually can predict the outcomes of movies pretty early on. And usually I can see the twist the writer planned. With this movie I was still left wondering into the last 5 minutes of the movie. I can't wait to own this on DVD.

I never got the movie and I probably never will. The person took my money and cashed my check as soon as possible and then took himself off membership at ebay. He won't answer his call and I can't leave a voice message. Ebay claims that they can't protect me because he went off membership. Embarassing.

Sleight Of Hand - Sleight Of Eye !!!! Stunning Portrait
Review created: 08/04/07
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

"The Prestige" is a frequently dazzling display of cinematic sleight-of-hand from Writer/Director Christopher Nolan ("Batman Begins").
"The Prestige" is an entertaining, handsomely produced period thriller that mostly holds you in its grip, engulfed in a narrative structure that's ultimately satisfying. This faithful adaptation of Christopher Priest's 1996, Prize-Winning Novel has so much atmospheric style, wit and dramatic intrigue that you ultimately surrender to the cinematic flawlessness of "The Prestige", which depicts a festering grudge between two Victorian-Era Stage Magicians that escalates to deadly heights.
As Cutter (Michael Caine), the ingeneur, (illusion designer), to both magicians (explained via voiceover), "The Prestige" refers to the third act, or pay-off in every magic trick. It follows "The Pledge" (set-up) and "The Turn," the actual performance of the illusion.
According to the press notes, Nolan and his brother, Co-Screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, used the three-part structure of a magic trick as their narrative guide in adapting Priest's densely layered, epistolary novel, which flashes back and forth in time between turn-of-the-century London and faraway Colorado.
For the bitter rivalry between elegant master showman Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and the unpolished but equally gifted Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) will unfold on both the stages of London's Music Halls; and in the snowbound Colorado Springs Laboratory of Scientist Nikola Tesla (David Bowie).
The visionary inventor, and despised rival of Thomas Alva Edison, represents Angier's best chance of topping Borden's signature trick: "The Transported Man." Blending radical science and traditional magic, Angier briefly gains an advantage; but Borden refuses to concede defeat, even as their lethal feud eventually ensnares Cutter, Borden's fragile Wife (Rebecca Hall), and the gorgeous stage assistant Olivia Wenscombe (Scarlett Johansson).
To reveal any more details about "The Prestige" would spoil its many surprises and nifty plot twists; the majority of which catch you off-guard—like any good magic trick.
That "The Prestige" has narrative ingenuity to spare makes for a film that's often exhilarating to watch. For a story ostensibly set in motion by a devastating tragedy that consumes both men and wreaks havoc with their intimates, there's entwined an emotional pull to "The Prestige". Loaded with betrayals, double-crosses, and surprises provides sufficient time to flesh out the characters. The final revelation may not "surprise" anyone who "watches closely," to quote the advertising tagline. However, this absolutely isn't to say that the resolution is blatantly obvious from the start. Nolan is much too sly and skillful a filmmaker to show us all the tricks up his directorial sleeve and retain that delicious shiver of surprise.
That said, the movie is an eminently enjoyable and clever period thriller, graced with charismatic leads (Jackman is particularly impressive; as is Christian Bale); blended aside an excellent supporting cast; and the bravura filmmaking from Nolan - the Cinematic Magician of "The Prestige".

SEE THIS !!!! A True Eye-Pleaser & Assured Entertainment - Start-To-Finish with Top-Shelf Cinematography and Acting.

BRAVO !!!!

HELLO,I am taking the time to respond to this review to let you know that I never receivied this order.I sent my payment to this person and the same afternoon, this person became a no longer registered e-bay user.I have e-mailed this person but still no response.I also wanted to let you know this is not the first time that this has happened to me.I just wish that there was some way to hold these people accountable and some way to warn buyers like myself that these people were going to be taken off you registery, before we send a payment.I think that if everyone would have to go thru PAYPAL there would be less problems, because everything that I have not receivied,or had problems with, were people who did not take PAYPAL.THANK YOU

The Prestige works its magic with audiences of all interests. This movie is about a friendship between two magicians that becomes twisted and filled with revenge and jealousy. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are young magicians who work together in their early career, but some dramatic events turn them on each other and create an intense rivalry. I hesitate to give away too much of the story because watching the events unfold for the first time is the key to this movie's value. Overall, the movie is very well done. The cinematography and locations are excellent, the acting is terrific, the supporting cast with Scarlett Johansson and Michael Caine is splendid, and the story keeps you engrossed until the final credits. The Prestige is a dramatic story, filled with twists, turns, and some entertaining magic tricks. Don't miss this one!

There are 3 acts to a magic trick...

This was a very good movie with great actors and directing. Although comparable to the Illusionist because of the content, The Prestige is a very different movie. I was thoroughly confused for about the first 20 minutes because of the flashbacks and present day transitions between the two. You slowly understand the rivalry between the two magicians and begin to appreciate competition and what it brings. The ending sews everything together and completes the masterpiece. I actually had to watch it twice to fully understand the little things.

  One of my favorite movies!
Review created: 08/10/09

You're going to want to watch this movie again as soon as it's over. The story line is a masterpiece, although it may seem a bit jumbled the first time you watch it. If you keep in mind that the film itself is an illusion as much as the character's tricks are then you might not be so easily confused the first time you watch it, as i was. Overall...ingenious plot, fantastic acting, and a well spent friday night. :)

Pretty good movie, I was hoping it would be more about Nicola Tesla, but it was really about the lengths that two turn of the 19th century competing magicians would go to to have a leg up on their competition with each other.
A few suprising twists and turns, but not as mind blowing as I expected.

This is a 'who done it' movie. The characters are not whom they claim to be; turn off the cellphone, otherwise you'll miss the plot as it develops. If you like magic tricks, you won't be disappointed with this movie. If you miss something the first time, play it back and see it again before moving on to the next scene! Enjoy.

Great twist and great acting. Although at times you just want to say "Just move on with your life," it is interesting how the main characters must win no matter what the cost. Great movie.
