  Presenting Lily Mars!

A stage struck girl who wants to make it big gets involved with a handsome director
and she keeps bugging him for a part. Her family is rather a bunch of odd balls but loving and supported in every way. Lilly then stoles away to New York to be rejected again, but something happens and they both start to fall in love. This is one of Judy Garlands first adult rolls and may I say very sexy women. It's a family fun movie with music, dance and a happy ending for all.

  Entertaining and fun
Review created: 05/10/09

Presenting Lily Mars was a good fit for Judy Garland as she continued her meteoric rise as one of MGM's biggest stars. Being groomed for young adult roles when this film was produced in 1943, Garlamd would make the ultimate transition to major stardom a year later with the classic Meet Me in St. Louis.
In Presenting Lily Mars, Garland and Van Heflin make for a somewhat unusual pairing. But this film hits the mark, providing family entertainment and World War II escapism.

  Garland shine again
Review created: 09/20/07

Although she received second billing next to James Stewart, MGM kept expanding Lana Turner's small role into the major female lead and much of the attention is on the "glamor girls" including Hedy Lamar. But it is Judy who is sometimes left in the background--but never for long. She is the only 3 hopefuls for the the famous Ziegfield Follies that really makes it in the business. And when she is singing the touching "I'M ALWAYS CHASING RAINBOWS" she can't be topped and steals the show. Lana goes about success the wrong way and ends up losing. Garland makes it at the end as a star. James Stewart as Turner's love interest is rather wasted. And Hedy is around for the glamour. Add Tony Martin who is not needed for the singing, Garland can handle that chore by herself, is also wasted.

But the movie does give an insight into how difficult it is to break into show business and is filled with enough subplots to keep the viewer glued to the set. Garland looks quite beautiful for the first time and carries the show.

Don't miss this one.
