This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti (1986, Paperback)

I read this book many years ago and it changed my life, or at least the way I looked at life. It opened by eyes to what was really going on around me. I highly recommend it for any adult interested in spiritual matters. I decided to buy this book because the copy I had on my bookshelf got loaned to someone (and not returned yet!) and I need to read it again before I loan it to someone else - who knows I may end up buying another copy just so I can loan it out again - it's that important of a book!

I really liked this book and was a classic Frank Peretti. I think that Piercing the Darkness is even better so if you read this one, you HAVE to read the second one.

I cannot say enough great things about this book! I was unable to put it down once I was able to keep track of all the characters. It was the most amazing way of putting good and evil that I've ever read. First time, I was able to imagine demons and angels in a REAL way. I've totally changed my prayer life based on this book. WONDERFUL!!!!!

This book is so good at showing people what is going on in the spiritual realm of our lives. Even though it is fiction, it still shows what is happening in the Kingdom of God. I have given this book to people to help them see why they have struggles in so many areas.
There is only one complaint about the book and that is in the beginning it is a slow read, but if people can stay with it they will be glad they did.

The book, although fiction, gives insite as to what could be happening in the spiritual world when we are facing tough times. It gives hope that there is a higher power fighting for us!

This is an exelent book, full of suspense and reality of what happens on the Spiritual world. Tottaly recommend this book. Great author!!

I enjoy Frank E. Peretti's books and was sold on this author when I read Piercing the Darkness. Afterwhich, it's customary to collect his books and read what story he wants to tell. I call this author a "stephen king" version of christian suspense. Each book teaches a lesson and it's up to the reader to decipher how to apply those lessons to their own lives. I haven't read this book yet and it is the premiere to Piercing the Darkness. I've read Prophet, Tilly, House, and Monster. All excellent readings. These are "guy" type books and although women can read them they are very in depth spiritually.

I ordered this book because I had a copy a few years ago that someone borrowed and never returned. I loved it so much that I had to get another copy to read to my high school aged children. This book, even though it is fiction, opened my eyes to the importance of intercessory prayer. This is a captivating book.

Frank E. Peretti is an amazing writer. This Present Darkness only helps that fact along. The book is just slightly confusing and slow and hard to get into at the begining, but after the first two chapters you won't go to sleep until you know what is going to happen next. You'll be reading this in every spare minute of your day. Now I know what you're thinking. You're saying, "Okay, so I won't be able to put this crazy book down, would any body mind telling me WHY this book is exciting?!"
Fine then, I'll tell you. This book is all about spiritual warefare. These demons are trying to take over a whole town and some angels are sent there to stop them. Most of this book isn't in spirits' perspectives however. Most of the book is bassed on the problems the humans are having in that town. The main characters, Marshall Hogan and Bernice Kreuger (Sorry if any of those names are spelled wrong.) work for the "Ashton Clarion," the small newspaper of the town of Ashton. Another main character, Hank Busche, is a pastor of a small church in Ashton who also has extreme problems and adventures. These characters all bring such life to the book and you'll have to read it to understand what I mean.
This book is getting hard to describe, but I'll do my best to explain to you what you need to know. Just pretend that there are tons of people all doing different things. These people continue to do this until somehow they all meet up. Then all kinds of events go crazy and... well... you're confused, aren't you. Well, just read the book. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Now then, to even further intruge you, imagine this. A crazy woman comes to your door and tries to get you to fall for her even though you're already married, your daughter begins to believe that there is a god inside of herself and she almost dies because of this belief, the pastor of the most popular church in your town turns out to be a fake who is leading everyone away from God, so many important people begin to fall into the self-god belief and get together and take out anyone they dislike and make it look legal, and maybe someone even steals your truck and drives it off a bridge. That's only a very small ammount of some of the things you will find in this book.
If you STILL think that you don't want to read this book consider this. I have never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER met someone who has read the book and disliked it. This is an AMAZING Christian based book by Frank E. Peretti. I absolutely LOVED it. If you don't like it, you're one in a billion.

This is the first of the series Mr Peretti wrote. It is SUPER. You will never want to just be in a room by yourself, cause you be thinking who else is here? & you will be right. Follow this book by reading Piercing the Darkness. You will LOVW them.

I love ALL of Frank Peretti books. They follow true to my Christian beliefs, and are exciting fiction that keep you in suspense....they are far from "boring Christian novels" I like to purchase from Ebay, as it is convenient and I find I have a wide, wide range of items to bid on, and or purchase. I have very very rarely, run into a seller who I found to be difficult or misrepresenting the item they are selling...I have had very positive experiences with sellers. Living on a farm, rural as I am, I am not near shopping centers. This makes it very nice to "shop" on ebay at the end of the day when chores are done, or in the afternoons, when I take breaks, without having to drive 45 min. to a store.

I am generally very pleased with ALL of my ebay purchases, and have had sellers very understanding with my sudden trips to hospitals and hospital stays without the capabilities to respond to them. Ebay is a wonderful way to help "buy American" and recycle quality items....Sandy

I needed this to replace my lost copy. Very easy to purchase and have delivered. If anyone enjoys a good story and a great story line, this is it.

i read this book when i was younger and absolutely loved it! its full of good and evil spirits and other supernatural things! angels vs. demons! i purchased it because i know i will love reading it again!

Peretti's masterpiece won all the awards a generation ago, and well it should have. His book, once it gets going, is hard to put down. After it has taught you its unforgetable lesson on prayer, please pray that the finances could be put together for a movie. A movie based on this book would undoubtedly top the box office, (though of course Hollywood would despise it). With today's special effects, it would be one of the best movies ever made. Read Peretti's books and you'll never go back to some Harry Potter dud again!

Nice book to read. I got this book as a gift and read it pretty fast.
It is interesting. I enjoyed reading it.

I actually bought this book for my husband. I read it several years ago and I remembered how much I enjoyed it. He liked it just as much and will probably read other books by Frank Peretti.

I had read this book years ago and decided it was time I had it in my own library.
Peretti does the best job of a fictional account of spiritual warfare than any book I have read on the subject. His characters are well developed and his settings are well drawn. In my opinion, this is his best book.
You don't have to be a Christian to enjoy This Present Darkness. Anyone who has a passing interest in angelology and demonology would find Peretti's perspective on the subject enlightening and entertaining. There is a good bit of suspense thrown in and it is well done.

I initially bought this book for my husband, he had read it a long time ago, and lost his copy, but when I recieved it in the mail I just couldn't put it down. As a devout christian, I can fully appreciate the reality of this book. Yes it is a work of fiction, but the events can be very real. A definate read, and a definate recommendation. Just awesome!

This book gives a good look into a spiritual world that is real but few people have written about. I'm replacing the copy I lost so I can read it again.

In the style of "Screwtape Letters", this book has demons discussing how to deceive unsuspecting human beings. There are also human characters in a small town. A true Christian novel. I will be looking on ebay for more Frank Peretti novels!
