Practical Hints on Playing the Baritone (Euphonium)

I would give this book about a B-plus for a grade. Some sections are excellent (specifically Brian Bowman's tips on proper embouchure for different note registers, although I would not agree that the players who prefer to narrow the air passageway for high notes by blowing upwards v. downwards in the mouthpiece are "...very few.." in number). The introductory pages distinguishing baritone horns from euphoniums and the mouthpiece diagrams as well as mouthpiece selection tips are also very helpful and informative. In the alternative fingering pages, it would have been useful to discuss the fact that C# (with all three valves depressed)needs to be "humored" a bit since the tone is apt to be somewhat sharp. This is not due to a defect in the instrument but is a natural consequence of the harmonics of valved brass instruments.
Overall, Mr Bowman's work should be a great help to beginning baritone/euphonium players and it is well worth the modest price.
