Album Notes

Additional personnel includes: Anne Dudley, Andrew Jackman (conductor); Andy Richards (keyboards, programming); Jim Burgess (programming).
After the success of its 1984 synth-driven album, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, Rush continued in the same direction for its follow-up, POWER WINDOWS. Although the trio had made a name for itself originally with hard-edged prog-rock, Rush began embracing new wave sounds by the mid '80s. While many other hard rock bands of the '70s who made similar musical detours struggled to maintain their audiences in the '80s, Rush thrived and expanded its already huge fan base even further.
While past Rush releases like 2112 contained tales of science fiction, by POWER WINDOWS, head wordsmith/drummer Neil Peart was penning lyrics about current events, especially the threat of nuclear war. "Big Money" was a popular clip on MTV, while other Rush highlights of the era included "The Manhattan Project," "Marathon," "Mystic Rhythms," and "Territories." After the release of POWER WINDOWS, Rush slowly began returning to its more hard rock-based roots, resulting in COUNTERPARTS and TEST FOR ECHO during the '90s.

My favorite Rush album: A feast of sound

I used to really dislike this album, would have rated it 2 stars about 3 months ago. Now, it's actually my favorite Rush album, and Rush is my favorite band. I don't think that the guitar is buried as much as Signals or Hold Your Fire, but there is just as much synthesizer as Hold Your Fire and more than Signals. The album is very well-balanced, with all 4 instruments keeping each other in check.

The highlights of this album are the epic Manhattan Project, the climactic Marathon (tied with The Fountain of Lamneth for my favorite Rush song), and the pounding Mystic Rhythms. The other 5 tracks are also masterpieces, but if I were to fully describe each track, I'd run out of room.

My recommendation: Don't buy this as your first Rush album... Buy it as your 5th or so, and give it time to warm up to you. It really is amazing if you let it be.

Pros:
It's smartly done.

Cons:
They're not being very adventurous.

Overall Score: 3/5 Best song: Big Money Worst song: Mystic Rhythms Review Body: One of the most adequate albums on the planet Earth. Power-Trio Rush Showcases Power Windows

Pros:
Excellent musical and lyrical showcase of Rush's talents.

Cons:
Takes a listen or two to fully appreciate.

Note: This review is part of a re-writing process I'm going through on my earlier Rush entries. Some of them clearly needed a little more polish so I felt obligated to do so. Rather than delete the original and re-submit a new review, I felt it best to simply modify the original and add a notification of the updated review in PTiemann's Notification System. Thanks for reading... ... Rush started off the 80's (literally) with one of their most popular albums ever - Permanent Waves. They followed that masterpiece with their best-selling album of all time - Moving Pictures. Then after releasing..

What a Powerful comeback!

Pros:
New balance in sound, energetic rhythms

Cons:
Just shy of perfect

Somehow, after two disappointing albums, Rush moved closer to solving the puzzle of their sound with Power Windows. On first listen the subtleties weren t clear and the album didn t sound particularly impressive, but after a few spins on the turn table it becomes clear how much better this album was than the previous two. It is near perfect in a number of ways. At long last, a truce is struck between guitar and synthesizer and both now hold a place of honor in the court of Rush. The songs are far more commercial than anything Rush has ever produced; yet they maintain an unapologetic resolve...

Where RUSH really lost me.

Pros:
Manhattan Project and maybe one minute
of the song Territories.

Cons:
Big Money, Mystic Rhythms, too cold and mechanical.

I am a HUGE Rush fan, but I really dislike this album! There are a number of reasons why I dislike this album. For one,and this is probably my biggest gripe, I feel that Rush got too far away from their hard rock/prog metal roots on this. They sound way too much like an 80s new wave/pop band on Power Windows, with all their new fangled synthesizers and keyboards. Geddy's bass playing is different, Lifeson employs too much effects with his guitar. In place of the thick tone from the 70's is a thin and weedy sound, even on the power chords. I realize that people change and their musical likes..
