Recorded at Grant Avenue Studio, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in October 1983 and December 1984. POWER SPOT is the 1986 landmark recording by one of the pioneers of intelligent, synth-oriented jazz-rock. Jon Hassell is a master trumpeter whose unique style and sounds have influenced a generation of musicians from the Talking Heads to Deep Forest. His fusion of Western classical music with world influences is the cornerstone of the now-ubiquitous genre of world music. The title track is a brilliant polyphonic composition that chugs through J.A. Deane's textured electronic percussion as Hassell's trumpet moans and shimmers. This complex musical tapestry shows influences as diverse as Africa's hypnotic drumming, swirling Middle Eastern-flavored solos, and the nascent electronic trappings of LaMonte Young. "The Elephant and the Orchid" is a gorgeous, extended meditation on these concepts and features exotic sounds and tape loops that, by default, would be called world music, but in actuality, are simply not of this world. POWER SPOT was produced by Brain Eno and Daniel Lanois, two musicians who excel in innovative recording techniques and capturing the singular styles of exceptional artists. Jon Hassell is a perfect match for Eno and Lanois. They faithfully reproduce his musical voice while adding the fire that saves this recording from having any cold, robotic effects. Robust and satisfying, POWER SPOT remains a seminal recording in the electronic and world music genres.
