Portable Sounds by TobyMac (CD, Feb-2007, Forefront Records)

Awesome follow-up to "Diverse City". Although not quite as excellent as it's predecessor, it is well worth any dollars you might shell out for it. "Boomin'" is by far, IMO, the best track on the disc but has others such as "One World", "I'm For You" and "Lose My Soul" in which T_mac enlists the help of gospel great Kirk Franklin. His son, Truett (aka Tru-Dog) makes a reappearance with "Hype Man", which truly gives the CD a "family" appeal. Toby Mac keepin' it real...you won't be disappointed!!

I don't think that this is his best album, but it is just as good as Diverse City. There are tracks that have such a unique sound and they are so catchy. It is hard to top such a great sophomore effort like Diverse City, but Portable sounds is right up there. Worth the investment for this album.

After much debate (on if I should buy the album or just download the songs I knew I loved)
I went ahead and just got the CD. I popped it in my car's cd player for the first time and started to listen. At first I wondered if I made the right choice in getting the cd vs. the songs I wanted it for. It took listening to every song a couple times and then I found myself really loving the whole thing... There is a really cute track that one of his kids helps out with and it is so cute! If you are a Toby Mac fan you will love this cd. It's a bit on the Christian "Pop/Rap/R&B side. I know that's a crazy variety of music but this cd has just a little hint of it all. Hope this helps you in your decision! God Bless...

I have been a DC Talk/TobyMac for a long, long time and this album surpasses all previous recordings in my opinion. My husband and I love it and so do my kids who are 10 and 13. Also, one of the best concerts I have been to in a long while.

TobyMac is one third of Christian Rock group DC Talk, and "Portable sounds" is his third solo CD. It follows up the gold selling "Diverse city", and like its predecessor, features a diversity in sound and strong Christian lyrics. The CD debuted at #10 on Billboard's album charts.

Opening is the soul/funk horn sprinkled "One world", a celebratory song with rapped verses urging all God's children to "Come as you are" and "Come together in love".

The melodic "Made to love" is rockier (with a reggae bridge) and wouldn't sound out of place on a DC Talk album (it reminds me of "What have we become" from "Jesus Freak"), with lyrics about the essence of our creation; "I was made to find you/I was made just for you/Made to adore you/I was made to love". Similar in sound is the funk/rocker "I'm with you".

"Boomin'/Opera trip" is a loud guitar driven funk work out, with an operatic outro. "Face of the Earth/Chuck @ Artist Development" is a midtempo acoustic song with rapped verses and a catchy chorus.

"No ordinary love" is a horn peppered upbeat boy-band sounding song with additional vocals by Nirva Dorsaint-Ready. "Feelin' so fly" is similar.

"Ignition" as its name infers is a blistering rocker, while "Suddenly" is a sunny sounding retro rocker with a catchy guitar riff and refrain.

"All in (letting go)/Mr Talkbox" is a midtempo guitar driven song (the closest thing to a ballad on this CD) with nice harmonies, and closing is the soulful "Lose My Soul/Afterparty" with Kirk Franklin (who also appeared on TobyMac's debut "Momentum") & Mandisa, with lyrics eschewing materialism for spirituality.

I must confess I was not happy when DC TALK broke up and was not going to listen to any of the solo albums till they got back together. But i heard some of Tobys stuff from his Momentum CD and was hooked. I love the Rap/Rock mix or urban rock they call it. But portable sounds is the best. It has the most diversity on it and much more rock and urban rock over the more rap, hip hop of momentum and diverse city. way to Go Toby this is one awesome CD

I bought this cd because I wanted something different. It's a Rap/Rock cd .It had great reviews, so why not? I was pleased. This is a cd that can take a dull day and make it into a great day. "Ignition" will light you up with it's rockiness, and if it doesn't I don't know what will. "Made to Love" talks about how all of us are made to love God. "No Ordinary Love" is about God's undiscrible love. To end the cd,TobyMac,Kirk Franklin and Mandisa sing " Lose My Soul", more like a prayer being sung about being all for God and being the way God wants us to be. I LOVE this cd and HIGHLY recomend it.

Stays true to Toby's style of music-It's AWESOME, moving, and fun. I love how he's not afraid to go "out of the box" in his writing and singing style. Each song delivers a message pertinent to daily needs I encounter and it ALWAYS lifts me up when I need it : )

TobyMac is a very talented artist. The reason I decided to buy it, I have his previous CD's and I have not been not disappointed. And this new CD only proves he continues to hold true to his Godly Image.

Really great music, kid friendly and fun to listen to for the whole family! Highly recommend getting this CD and Toby Mac's other CD's, too!

I just kept hearing and seeing so much about TobyMac and finally broke down and ordered a cd to see what was up with it. I love it! I wish I had checked on this earlier. lol Now we keep it in the car to listen to it when we are just taking a ride or something. Its awesome!

This upbeat christian CD speaks to some of the issues that America's youth are facing, in a hip hop beat that all young at heart can get down with. Great songs, great message, great music. We have all of the DC Talk CD's and all of TobyMac's solo work and this has to be about as good as it gets.

Great new music! Heard Toby interviewed before the Dove Awards and they played "Feelin' So Fly" even though it's not on the radio--loved it! Had to get it! Had to hear Truett's (Tru Dog) new beat too :-)

Portable Sounds is Great; uplifting, insightful & fun. Toby Mac is an inspiring artist that has faced real-world issues, conquered some, lost to some, and is ever-learning about the limitless, matchless Grace of that limitless, matchless name, JESUS!

Only two songs that I thought were good. Must be why they made the air play on the radio. One song had his son and it was a little out of line in my way of thinking.

This was a very satisfactory transaction. I would definitely do business again with seller in the future.

Price! Seller and TobyMac. This is another silly review. Wants at least 100 characters? What's up with that? If we can keep it simple then why not? Crazy eBay, sometimes they really amaze me at what they come up with. Time wasters. When they really need to get on top of things like bum buyers who say item is broken, get refund and keep item without any proof. Then leave negative feedback. I tried to warn sellers but the feedback I left, since it was positive, the only thing you can leave for buyers, was negative, truthful but negative, eBay removed it. Sellers beware, there is no system to alert you if buyers are bums. Fortunately 90% of all eBayers are great. It is the 10% we have to watch for. Just like in society.

The music is great because it has moral meaning in today's society where music is all about everything except life's morals.

I can not explain how happy I purchased this CD.. It is simply awesome. I have to play it everyday. It gets me pumped up for work and I am sure I look like a complete idiot dancing along the way.. but I feel compelled to sing with all the songs. Nothing like having God move thru you in a song. I would have to suggest this cd to any Christian rock lover. TMac can get you excited about the day ahead.

I thought Christians take care of Christians, but then again this company sells Christian items, but treats their buyers with disrespect. When I leave positive feedback, I expect the SAME treatment? This company or person stated to me, "I might forget" pertaining to leaving me feedback after a transaction 10 days prior because I had questioned them about it. I have been dealing with people only two years and have never been threatened about a feedback?
