Publisher's Note
Intellectual history has suffered in comparison to the institutional and political history of the Tudors in recent years, and this collection of essays is a concerted aim to redress the balance. It offers new departures by addressing a range of problems in Tudor statecraft and the workings of the state that have not previously been considered; by offering perspectives on the appropriate contexts for understanding Tudor political ideas, with particular emphasis on medieval anthropology and literary criticism, not usually practiced in this period. Combining the work of the `Cambridge school' with the Begriffsgeschichte (history of concepts) and using a wide variety of source material, this volume provides a strikingly innovative and cohesive group of essays.
Industry Reviews Nine essays seek to further the intellectual and cultural history of the Tudor period, of which the institutions and politics have been so richly studied. From the perspectives of political anthropology, sociology, and literary historicism, they delve into such topics as the emergence of political economy, policy on war and peace, approaches to resistance, and the political use of the past. One of the essays is a critical bibliography. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or. Reference & Research Book News
