Polaroid DRM-2001G - Easy to Upgrade

This recorder has some faults... mainly a horribly designed remote.
But this HDD recorder can be upgraded easily... The hard drive is just plug & play.. 200-250GB hard drives are easy to find on Ebay for $40 or so. The hard drive in the player is a WD800BB.. I replaced it with a WD2000JB.. WOrks great.
And now I can record almost 2 weeks of Lifetime Channel. Joy.

      DVD\HDD Recorder

After reading posts on AVS Forum's discussion devoted to Polaroid's DRM-2001G DVD recorder, I decided to buy one. I wanted a recorder with a hard drive, rather than pay a monthly fee for a DVR service. I returned my first machine, after reading that later productions had improvements, like passing through a signal when turned off. I like being able to record onto a hard drive & then decide whether or not to copy the movie onto a DVD. Also, if rain interrupts the satellite reception, I have not wasted a DVD. I can edit on the hard drive extra material before & after the program & commercial breaks, which will then not be recorded onto DVD. The Polaroid can play a film from its hard drive or a DVD while recording another film to the HD. It has a component input, as well as a component output. It allows timeshifting up to an hour of a program so that one doesn't miss anything if one must leave the room for a while. It has 6 recording levels. It finalizes a DVD 10 times faster than my old DVD recorder. The quality of its picture is good. It is the cheapest DVD recorder with a HD that I have found.
The remote control has the narrowest range of any I've had. The manual is badly written, with some factual mistakes. One can't record from DVD to hard drive. Only 12 characters are allowed for titles.
Sometimes it freezes when I am editing on the HD, & I have to re-start it.
