Almost as stupid, ugly, and nasty as Deliverance!

I like Lee Marvin, the archetypal tough guy. I also, within limits, enjoyed the book by Donald Westlake. So when I saw this piece of garbage advertised as a neo-noir classic I decided to purchase it. If you did read the book, The Hunter, you can forget about any resemblance, however slight, to this movie. They even change the main character's name from Parker to Walker for no apparent reason. The script begins rather badly with the initial premise. John Vernon, the Dean in Animal House, gets his best prison buddy Walker to go in with him on a heist. Vernon owes money to the Organization and he'll be dead if he doesn't come up with it. But he won't have enough if he gives Walker his cut so Vernon shoots Walker and leaves him for dead, not only taking his money but also Walker's girl friend. What they have robbed is an Organization money drop on Alcatraz island, by helicopter no less. Forget how stupid that is and think about this: Vernon is robbing the Organization and giving them their own money bank and that's just fine with them. Vernon is already rising in their ranks when Parker, excuse me, Walker, has recovered enough to come after him. There soon follows an extremely annoying and incomprehensible scene in a nightclub where Walker does massive bodily harm to unidentifiable characters to the accompaniment of non-stop loud screeching. The rest of the movie is just one pointless scene after another. In short, this was Lee Marvin's most wooden and boring performance and the talents of Keenan Wynn and Carroll O'Connor are given no opportunity to shine. Boorman must think that creating interesting characters detracts from the violence. Deliverance was an abortion. This movie is merely a waste of time.
