Synopsis
This beginner's guide to writing poetry leads teachers and writers through exercises with the aim of freeing the "coyote spirit" within--that inner trickster of Native American lore with a wily imagination and a poetic sensibility. The games and advice here seek to free the imagination. Throughout, Wooldridge shares samples of many favorite poets, including Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, Emily Dickinson, and others.

I have had this book for a few years. I bought it for a poetry class to help get my muse in her groove. It worked! Use it as a field guide to imagination. It is a collection of high-spirited meditations and strategies that will put you in a "poetry state of mind." Ms. Wooldridge sets up a field for poems to become fertile. You have to let things you see, speak to you and this book tells you how. As Pablo Neruda wrote...."Poetry arrived....in search of me. I don't know, I don't know where it came from, from winter or a river. I don't know how or when."
