My family has hundreds of old Kodachrome slides stored away in slide clips and carousels. Very few of the images (dating back to the 30s) have ever been captured digitally. After weeks of research, I finally decided to purchase the Plustek OpticFilm 7500i SE Film Scanner in order to start scanning in these priceless (to us) images.

Set up of the scanner couldn't have been easier. I personally found the Silverfast software intuitive and easy to use. What impressed me the most about the Silverfast software is that I can upgrade it (if I want to) to a version calibrated to Kodachrome film colors to automate the process of color correction of the slides.

The film holders, while plastic, feel sturdy and well made. While some people prefer a motorized film holder advance function in their scanner, I feel that the manual operation of this scanner means one less thing to break (if your motor transport dies on one of those other models, you're stuck!).

Image quality is impressive. The multi-sample option REALLY cuts down on noise and grain -- even in my print negatives that weren't taken using high speed film! Slides come out amazingly sharp and vivid. The infra-red dust and scratch removal works really well, from what I've experienced, and makes post processing much less tedious.

Maybe this scanner doesn't have all the bells and whistles of one of the super high end (and super high priced) models, but for someone who just wants to archive their personal photos on their own time, it performs way off the top of the charts. Personally, I feel that you get your money's worth and more.

Awesome.
The quick-time on demand tutorial makes this thing simple to use, even for an idiot like me.
For every single step there is a Q button to use if you need it.
Do not let my calling it simple cause you to assume that its cheesy
Very high quality materials and extremely flexible and effective software. Lets you blow the image way up and fix the tiniest defect. Awesome auto as well as manual image adjustment features.
Only 1 suggestion that I would not even call a complaint per say;
The film carrier should have optional film size selections as the unit is capable of scanning any size image but the carriers are limited to slides and 35mm negatives. I overcame this 1 minor short coming by cutting rectangular holes in a blank piece of 35mm film and taping smaller negatives over the hole but I'm sure they could provide different negative frames to facilitate other film sizes.

The scanner is easy to setup and to operate. Anyone who has worked at all with photos on a computer should be able to handle this with ease. The dust and scratch remover, however, does not work very well. I understand the new 7600 remedies that problem. I didn't want to wait for it as I have hundreds and perhaps thousands of slides and negatives to digitalize.

  Plustek 7500i SE film scanner

I love this scanner. It comes with professional software. I bought it to scan some of my old 'Kodachrome 64' slides for my image library. At around $300, this scanner is a huge jump from the $100 scanners and it can scan at 7200 dots per inch or less if you wish. I scan at 3600 dpi. The reviews of this scanner were all exemplary and various vendors said it was 'out of stock' so this was a good indication of how good a purchase this scanner is. Later .... - Fred
