Album Notes
Dump: James McNew (various instruments).
Additional personnel: Terry Pearson (harmonica).
The big man with the little voice is back, commanding a full frontal assault of winsome melodies. James Mc New (a.k.a. Dump) works a daytime gig as the bassist for Yo Lo Tengo, and on his third full length solo disc, the listener-friendly A PLEA FOR TENDERNESS, his more strident and bracing tendencies are kept at bay. They give way to a completely charming and infectious collection of songs, all sung in a voice that falls somewhere between the sound of Neil Young's and that of a lost little boy.
McNew is still displaying his usual wonderful taste in repertoire, covering songs by Jacques Dutronc, Robert Knight and the 13th Floor Elevators, making them all fit in seamlessly, side by side with his own material. Like a handmade Mother's Day card, this entire disc has that "I-made-it-just-for-you" feel throughout. So look for the pink bunny on the package, it's your assurance of quality.

Editorial Reviews
...a humble but undeniably heartfelt labor of love that celebrates the pop music that's moved him...
Magnet (03/01/1998)

...A PLEA FOR TENDERNESS compiles McNew's winsome originals and wide-ranging covers; he performs them all in a manner that's sincere, smart and inescapably charming....a modest album, but it's well worth your listening effort.
Option (03/01/1998)

4 Stars (out of 5) - ...Dump rambles playfully through jagged guitar grooves, swirling keyboards and intimately melodic ballads, testifying to the joy and pain of record collectors in love...
Rolling Stone (04/02/1998)
