Album Notes Additional personnel includes: Willie Nelson, Jewel. Producer: Merle Haggard. Compilation producers: Rob Santos, Gretchen Brennison. Recorded between 1994 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle. This is part of BMG's Platinum & Gold Collection Series. This overview of some of the most significant material in country legend Merle Haggard's songwriting canon also includes bonus collaborations with Willie Nelson and Jewel, in Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho and Lefty" and Lefty Frizzell's "That's the Way Love Goes," respectively. Haggard's outlaw songs are represented by "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" and "Mama Tried," while "Sing Me Back Home" and "Branded Man" are just two of the many songs that reflect the time he spent in San Quentin penitentiary in the late 1950s and early '60s. His 1999 re-recording with Jewel of his 1984 hit, "That's the Way Love Goes," is an inspired pairing, and his duet with Willie Nelson thrillingly combines the charismatic voices of these two country music veterans.
