Call it swamp rock, psychobilly, or southern-fried fun, but any way you slice it Southern Culture On The Skids is one sizzling good time. Their latest, PLASTIC SEAT SWEAT, serves up the usual buffet of deep-fried raunch rock from these trailer trash hooligans. Theirs is a fairly unexampled concocotion of rockabilly, blues, and surf, smothered in hillbilly country and rock and roll, with all the fixings. Southern Culture On The Skids knows how to kick out the jams, all the while staying true to their own small town roots.
PLASTIC SEAT SWEAT is a rocking, revved-up collection that manages to convey their more brazen live sound and to stand just dandy on its own too. Their lyrics focus on the mundane and the weirdly funny, from shotguns to good Southern cookin'. Smoking instrumentals like "Deja Varoom" round out the fun. The band's rugged unpretentiousness and humor are not lost among the swampy guitars and foot-stomping tracks. Don't let their twang fool you, they may be backwoodsy but they're sharper than Uncle Jeb's wood-cutting ax. This one leaves you with a satisfied palate and an odd craving for chitlins.
