Planet Earth - The Complete Collection (HD DVD, 2007, 4-Disc Set)

I've heard noting but prizes about this series. So, I decided to pick it up myself and see what all commotion is about. I've got to say that Planet Earth is amazing in every respect.
The series is about 550 minutes long and almost all is filmed in high definition. There are 11 parts to the series and they all take us through unique parts of our planet. Some animals are so rare that it is the first time that we can actually see them on film.
We can see how Great White Shark attacks seals in slow motion, how pack of lions attack an elephant. We can see the biggest caves in the world and what creatures live in them , the biggest falls in the world, the strangest creatures living in the deeps of the sea. I mean all this stuff is jaw dropping. Highly recommended.

You may love everything about this series if you like wild-life and breath-taking views of the earth's landscape. The version with the British narrator is done well but I am waiting for the version with Sigourney Weavor as that version is done just incredible. Her voice works seamlessly with the series and I couldn't find a thing a to complain about except that it ended!

I own both the BBC and Discovery versions, and they are both a feast for the eyes. Be wary, as the runtime, narration, and resolution for the different editions are EXTREMELY dissimilar!!

Be VERY careful, as just about EVERY version you find on ebay (and shipping within the USA) will most likely be the shorter running Discovery Edition, which mostly has a monopoly on the US market. If you want the BBC version, you typically have to purchase online through a british vendor (ie Amazon.uk). The BBC version is well worth an investment (if you must choose between the two)

Concerning 1080i vs 1080p:
Both state on the box that they are 1080i capable--this is not entirely true. The BBC version is mostly in 1080p, while some extras and bonus content are encoded in 1080i. For the Discovery version however, the entirety of the videos are in 1080i due to poor encoding.

David Attenborough BBC Edition:
Most people prefer his narration because he put a lot more heart into it. However, some find this edition annoying because he talks more than Sigourney in the US version. NOTE that this version has an extra 10 minutes added to EVERY episode when compared with the truncated US version as seen below.

Sigourney Weaver Discovery Edition
While most people are disappointed with her narrating style (not as much "acting" and emotion in it), most will agree that this is not a BAD version. The intros to each episode are more beautiful than the generic version for the BBC edition, but each episode is missing an extra 10 minutes due to US programming/commercial issues.

this is a fantastic set. i recommend getting the BBC version with Attenbough...much better than the discovery version with sigorney weaver.

My husband and I watched every show. It is truly an amazing piece of work. Definatly the best captured images of our Planet Earth.

This is a must have collection, Lots of high def scence of the wonderful world we live in. Learn about landscapes and animals. You will see beyond of what you already educated or saw on television.This is a must have dvd and I highly recommended

WOW! The most beautiful, educational, and entertaining HD DVD I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. However, if you can find the Planet Earth HD DVD with David Attenborough as narrator, buy it! Ms. Weaver, that narrates the U. S. version, sounds at times to be asleep, and rather mono toned. I bought the U. S. version and enjoyed the videos but did not care for Ms. Weaver's narration. So, I bought the BBC version with Mr. Attenborough and the narration was far superior. There are so many great narrators in the United States, I wonder why the U. S. producers chose Ms. Weaver?

I first caught and episode of this breath-taking series on Discovery HD. And being a nut for hd I look for shows to test my equipments abilities. This show not only showed the clarity of my equipment but the majesty of our planet. From cascading mountains to seemingly lifeless caves, this series takes you on a journey to the farthest and least visited corners of our planet. Hearing the conditions and risks the camera men and women underwent rendered even more respect and enjoyment from these shows. I highly recommend this dvd collection to any and everyone - well worth the money! Truly a masterpiece. You just have to see it to understand.
I used the xbox 360 hd dvd player for this with no problems. I have seen both the episodes with Sigorney Weaver and David Attenbough and recommend the one with Attenbough. In my opinion his voice is easier to listen too, i mean who doesnt like a british accent?? There are 4 disks with 3 episodes on each except for the last disk, making a total of 11 spectacular shows. Do yourself the favor and get it.

Content of the series is wonderful, 5/5. However, some portions of some episodes appear to have been filmed using lower quality cameras (especially the dark cave scenes) and it is very apparent on a large screen. Anything up to 50" picture should be ok, but be warned on 100"+ that you will not be pleased with the PQ of some portions of some episodes.

While this was a wonderful production, dont be fooled into thinking it is the one on tv currently. It is supposedly the same production, but with David Attenborough narrating and some segments have been renamed, it has also been reported that the Discovery channel version has been edited for time and content, if you want the new one, wait for the Discovery Channel release sometime in May....The new one is done with Sigourney Weaver, and is updated with Planet Earth the Future as seen on the Discovery Channel.....its worth having both, but make sure this is the one you want! Not sure what other changes there might be or what other differences, the broadcast here was also done in a different order...wickopedia has a great explanation! Hope this helps!

If you own an hdtv and an hd dvd player, this is a MUST HAVE in your collection. Although HD DVD has now lost the race for High Definition video, it doesn't mean your player must go in the trash or never be used. This collection is truly amazing. Turn out the lights, turn up the volume and sit back to be amazed at what the Earth has to offer. From the top of the tallest mountains to the bottom of the oceans, you will certainly be astonished to learn about some of the day to day activities that happen all around you. Unfortunately we just have a DVD. I didn't realize when I ordered the collection that I needed to have HD. So that was my fault - not the sellers. But I was happy with the service, price, etc. Would definitely buyer from this seller again.

The series Planet Earth was made popular by the Discovery Channel, which is where I first viewed. It was an instant love. This series of videos takes you across the world from the comfort of your own home, seeing animals or sights that few have ever seen. The reason that I decided to purchase this series was so that I could share my love of the series with my family.

I bought this cause I seen it on tv at best buy and thought it looked great. It is. They show you some of the most crazy creatures, animals, and life on earth. This Dvd put me to sleep a few times because of how relaxing the dvd is.
If you love animals and wild life this is a must buy.

Would like to make others (who are tech ignorant like me) aware. I bought an HD DVD to play on our HD TV, not knowing that I needed an HD DVD Player to play it. Figured it out rather quickly when my DVD player couldn't read it. Am now searching for a regular DVD so that I can enjoy this wonderful series.

The picture quality is VERY good in HD. However, if you have seen one nature show you have pretty much seen them all. I do believe that I will only watch this one time. I had been seeing the advertisements on TV about this product and I thought it would be nice to own. I am glad that I have watched it, but it will only be once, sadly.

I bought for a Christmas present so it has not been opened yet. But shipping was good, came in timely manner.

I pre-ordered the BBC PLANET EARTH series in HD DVD beore it was released. When it arrived I watched each of the three episodes on each of the four discs. They are nothing short of speticular. The quality of the filming is some of the best I have ever seen, bar none! (Of course you must have a HD DVD player). If you like nature, history, or just plain beautiful, rare and exotic areas of our earth, both underwater, mountains, or from space, you must have this set. Even after watching multiple times, you still pick up information and facts you missed on earlier viewings. If you can affort the sorta high price, you will never regret buying.
