Planet Earth - The Complete Collection (DVD, 2007, 5-Disc Set)

While this was a wonderful production, dont be fooled into thinking it is the one on tv currently. It is supposedly the same production, but with David Attenborough narrating and some segments have been renamed, it has also been reported that the Discovery channel version has been edited for time and content, if you want the new one, wait for the Discovery Channel release sometime in May....The new one is done with Sigourney Weaver, and is updated with Planet Earth the Future as seen on the Discovery Channel.....its worth having both, but make sure this is the one you want! Not sure what other changes there might be or what other differences, the broadcast here was also done in a different order...wickopedia has a great explanation! Hope this helps!

I'll keep it short: both Planet Earth and Blue Planet are the most enlightening series about our planet that anyone could see. Whether 5 or 50, these images will teach an appreciation for this pale blue dot we all live on.

I wrote a "review" on this product some time ago. I have retracted it due to some people may find it "offensive". I apologize for any inconvenience. For those that found my old review helpful and those that engaged in correspondence with me I appreciate your views and enjoyed the brief, yet stimulating views that others have on the subject that in the end really matter. The other posted reviews I am sure are more informational for the product itself. Enjoy.

Very little rates "Excellent" in my book any more but Discovery's exploration/
exposition of 'Planet Earth' is simply astounding. Takes my breath away. I bought sets of this incredible DVD production for my adult children so that they may see at their convenience - and be amazed by - the extraordinary footage showing our world, this planet upon which we live, in ways we could never, ever see it ourselves. Altogether a feat of great magnitude. If I could, I'd buy it for everyone I know.

this is a fantastic set. i recommend getting the BBC version with Attenbough...much better than the discovery version with sigorney weaver.

I own both the BBC and Discovery versions, and they are both a feast for the eyes. Because the resolution for both versions are the same (on DVD anyhow), many people are fixated on the differences in narration.

Be VERY careful, as just about EVERY version you find on ebay (and shipping within the USA) will most likely be the shorter running Discovery Edition, which mostly has a monopoly on the US market. If you want the BBC version, you typically have to purchase online through a british vendor (ie Amazon.uk). The BBC version is well worth an investment (if you must choose between the two), especially since you can usually procure it for about $35-$40 USD when the dollar is strong against the pound.

David Attenborough BBC Edition:
Most people prefer his narration because he put a lot more heart into it. However, some find this edition annoying because he talks more than Sigourney in the US version. NOTE that this version has an extra 10 minutes added to EVERY episode when compared with the truncated US version as seen below. This features an extra bonus disc that isn't available with the HD or Blu-Ray versions.

Sigourney Weaver Discovery Edition:
While most people are disappointed with her narrating style (not as much "acting" and emotion in it), most will agree that this is not a BAD version. The intros to each episode are more beautiful than the generic version for the BBC edition, but each episode is missing an extra 10 minutes due to US programming/commercial issues. This version features an extra bonus disc that isn't available with the HD or Blu-Ray versions.

I am a nature lover at heart, and this series is just unbelievable. The photography is fantastic. I love seeing creatures in their own habitats and all the beautiful scenery. I only saw 2 episodes on television, and missed the others, so I just had to purchase the complete series to see what I missed. I have no regrets, I love the whole series.

This series will take you to not only places you have never been, but to places that few humans have ever experienced. Amazing sites of incredible beauty are contrasted with the brutal nature of life and death in the wild.

I have never experienced a more worthwhile use of cutting edge technology in film making to show just how intriguing a planet we share. There is no horror movie that can compete with the monstrous vision of a giant Great White shark leaping out of the ocean to catch its prey. That gave me nightmares that Steven King has never accomplished.

I bought this because I saw just a few minutes of one episode in passing and it captured my imagination, I ordered it immediately. I am so happy to have it in my collection to enjoy and share with friends and family.

Turn off American Idol and watch this with your kids. I guarantee you it will take your breath away.

absolutely stunning. The videos are out of this world. A excellent compilation of nature, earth and species. great work. Oscar deserving. lol. Yet very educational. i never get tired watching is again and again. I bought it when Oprah recommended. She was right. mind blowing.

Item as described very interesting. I really like how the dvd goes into detail about the lifestyles and hardships that the animals encounter.

This is one of the best purchases I have acquired through E-Bay. These video's are second to none , they are the finest piece of photography I have seen In along time or even ever. Along with the Quality of this video,came the great price That I got for thru bidding on E-Bay, there was at least a $20.00 dollar plus price reduction when I bought it through E-Bay. I love the idea of having the 5 disc set of the Planet Earth program. I dislike the idea that 2 disc (#2 and #4) do not work.
I decided to buy it because I wanted to be able to watch the program and that my grand children could watch it as well.
I have returned this set to the seller after contacting them and was told I could.
I also purchased a set of these disc from another seller and disc #2 and #4 do not work. So if the first seller replaces their set I do not believe all of the disc will work in it.
I believe all of these Planet Earth sets being sold on ebay have bad disc in them. This is probably not the fault of the sellers as they are in cellophane wrapped boxes.
It would be interesting to know how many other buyers are having the same experience as I have.

THis DVD set consists of different places on our earth which house animals of all kinds. The animals are photographed in ways and doing things never seen before. The camera work and editing are spectacular especially when seen on high definition.

Beautiful photography. Amazing coverage of nature and natural phenomenon. Did not like commentary due to bias toward global warming and extreme environmentalism.

Blows you away with breath taking scenes of this magical planet we call home. I was in awe and feel gratitude washing over me in waves as I watched this.

This five disc set is unlike any film you've ever seen. The clarity is amazing! It feels as if you are there with the camera man. Whether it's in the air, on the ground, or under water the images that are captured are unbelievable.
Even if you aren't a big fan of nature, this film will blow you away. It covers jungles(Canopy to ground), forests(year-round and seasonal), oceans(From deep to shallow), grasslands, deserts, mountains, caves, fresh water, and etc.
You'll see some things in super-slow-motion like when the great white sharks breach the water in an attempt to capture its prey. And other film work that makes days, weeks, or even months pass by as seconds so you can see plants, trees, and fungus grow or even the seasons changing.
I've watched these discs many times already and I can honestly say that this is a great experience for people of all ages especially children.

It not only has wonderful picture quality, but it has a plot/ story behind it. I thought it would be very boring but it turned out to be fun and relaxing ... and educational. It is really appealing to every age. The only downside is the price, but it beats spending the money to travel. Hope this helps, God Bless.

Love the detail and the experience of watching nature up close. Bought this because I got a new 46" HDTV and wanted to watch this program on a big screen to get the full effect.

The high def on these videos is captavating and the action within is heart pounding. A great set for any one on the planet.
