Don't let the title fool you, "Plain Sweeping Themes For The Unprepared" by Monroe Mustang has nothing to do with the "alternative country" movement. Monroe Mustang is more closely aligned with fellow Texas guitar-slingers Bedhead. On this disc the band proves that one does not need a 72-track, state-of-the-art, digital recorder to make a great disc. 4 tracks and a good melody do just nicely. They strum along like a lackadasical Dark-Side era Pink Floyd on most of the tracks, but that doesn't stop them from rockin' out on a couple. Dig that "Dock Of The Bay" chord progression on "We Aren't The Stars." There are some nice touches of cello and trumpet, too.
