Unique Storytelling with Friendship, and Love

If you are confused by the story of The Place Promised in Our Early Days you are not alone....

the story is complex and many of the key story plots are left veiled until the end of the movie. However, with that said this movie is not only thought provocative, it is down right amazing. And the story behind the movie is designed to focus on the central themes of friendship, and love separated by infinite boundaries; so when a person is done with the movie the story takes a back seat to the feelings inspired by the movie. If there are people out there that still believe cartoons are just for children, movies like The Place Promised in Our Early Days are a prime example of animation being used as an alternative medium by telling an adult oriented story. The Place Promised in Our Early Days will easily fit into anime movie classics if not for the animation alone, and for its unique storytelling.

  Happy ending...or is it?
Review created: 03/30/09

This is Makoto Shinkai's first full-length film, and I'm quite impressed with the presentation. For those of you who've already seen 5 Centimeters per Second, they are quite similar in art style, music, and overall feel of the movie.
This is a sci-fi movie, centering around a mysterious tower in Japan. The plot can be very confusing to understand, but the themes are communicated very effectively. Also, the ending isn't quite clear but it is very satisfying.
A recommended film, it will be a very exciting and visually pleasing 90 minutes spent watching it.

  A great movie

The Place Promised in Our Early Days is an amazing movie by Makoto Shinkai. Makoto Shinkai has an elegance to his work and The Place Promised in Our Earlier Days is no different. The beautiful, yet melancholy vision of realism makes for a great movie ^^
