Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (DVD, 2003, 2-Disc Set, Special Edition)

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), is not y/our typical Errol Flynn type of machismo swashbuckling pirate; nor does he play another Disney Captain Hook. He's more like Fagan in "Oliver." And he's ever so fey. That's his charm.

Though the pirates on the "Black Pearl" ship are dead and sometimes in their skeleton form, they aren't scary enough for kids, since this is a comedy.

The story line goes like this: A governor's daughter is in charge of a young boy her own age who has been pulled out of the sea by her father's upper-crusty crew. She notices his necklace is a pirate's one and takes it from him so that he won't be hung to death.

But, the gold medallion is the last one of a pirate's treasure that has cursed all of the crew of the "Black Pearl" ship. Without its return with the blood of the boy on it, the skeletal crew remains dead, unable to feel any life in themselves, and are not killable since they are already dead!

Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp), though a bumbling comical pirate who is after the ownership of the "Black Pearl," a ship the cursed crew stole from him, plays a marvelously non-machismo, loveable, pirate character who is the super glue that holds all of the loose ends of the film together. Depp gives one of his cutest performances I've seen and is now my favorite pirate! The script ain't bad either.

If you haven't seen this movie...better yet, if you haven't purchased this movie, you are missing a GREAT movie. 5 stars. Definitely one of Johnny Depp's best movies. Can't wait for the next movie.

Curse of the Black Pearl is great. I've been to Disneyland many times and to see the pirates come to the screen is wonderful. I highly recommend this pirate movie.

This movie is fantastic. It is a swash-buckling thrill a minute. Johnny Depp has won my heart back as Capt. Jack Sparrow. He is comedy at its finest with his one-liners and quirky portrayal. Orlando Bloom's character, Will Turner is loveable and easy on the eyes. Keira Knightly is fantastic as Elizabeth Swann. I love a strong female character and not one who just waits to be rescued by men. Ms. Knightly is definitely not a girly girl in this film. Definitely a must see for any fan of Pirate movies!

This movie is a must buy!!!! One of Jonney Depps best films yet....until the next pirate of the caribbean i guess!! Jonney Depp shows a whole new funny side in this movie!! I give this movie a 5/5!!! A must have in everyones movie collection!!!!!

I love this movie and found a nice bargain on e-bay to own it for myself. The transaction was easy and quick and I would recomend e-bay as the best way to purchase dvds as well as other items as a simple and fun way to shop.

Adventure on the high seas. The pirates have taken over the Carribbean and are reaking havvoc upon the english newcomers. When the governers daugter steals a pirate's pendant from William Turner, her entire life changes, the black pearl comes after them and she is captured. Captain Jack Sparrow and William Turner chase after her with the crew they found in Tartuga.

The action is unbelievable and the music is thrilling. Makes a great family movie, unless you have children under the age of 8.

I would suggest this movie, I loved it and I think that you would enjoy it too.

While I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp, I spent the first 30 minutes of this film distracted by his accent. I couldn't quite work out if he were meant to be Cockney, Irish or what? and so much of the beginning was spoiled by my distraction.

After a while, that improved greatly and I was able to enjoy the witty script and great character of Jack Sparrow, and as always Depp played the quirky oddness brilliantly.

Fun film and the sequel looks like it will be even better!

I will never be able to look at Johnny Depp again without thinking of his unforgettable role as Pirate Jack Sparrow. His odd, drunken accent will stay in your mind for weeks. His superb acting ability draws you in completely making you believe he really is Jack Sparrow.

It is rare that DH and I find a movie we are both taken with ... but this one did it. We watched it twice in one week and laughed just as hard each time. This movie contains the perfect balance of action, adventure, comedy and romance (thankfully it doesn't have long, drawn-out love scenes).

I highly recommend this movie as it will whisk you away into the fiction world and keep you captivated from beginning to end!

Lots of action and adventure to be seen in this movie. If you are into pirates (and a bit of a love story), this is an excellent movie. My only complaint is that it is a little longer movie, so be prepared to be parked for awhile- however, it would not be complete without those extra scenes. I would definitely recommend this one!

Johnny Depp was excellent in this film. A big thumbs up for this performance. The movie was exciting!!! Whether you are buying, renting, or seeing this film at the theatre, it will be money well spent. A+++++

This is the film that made me the fan of Johnny Depp that I am today. Loved every second of it. I am counting down th days until the second POTC is released!

This is a great movie! I grew up around Disney World and remember riding the Pirates ride many of times. It was great to see certain things from the ride added into the movie. Then you have Johnny Depp who does a wonderful job. He plays Capitan Jack like no other person could have done. There are little movements and looks he does that just makes you laugh. The movie has great sword fights and wonderful special effects. The special features are also wonderful. DO NOT forget to watch the Bloopers! LOL Funny!! This is just a great movie to own!

Loved this movie. Bought it for my collection. Johnny Depp was great as Cpt. Jack Sparrow! One of the best roles he's ever played. Best one for Orlando Bloom since Lord of the Rings! Kiera Knightley keeps getting better, too... The tale of the curse was captured well, loved the effects and costumes. Great job overall with bringing this fantasy of sea tales and curses to "life", so to speak...

It is an awesome movie. The special effects are unbelievable.. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The story line is easy to follow and the characters are fantastic.

Who would have ever expected Johnny Depp would portray this character, Captian Jack, so well. Being a Disney fan of the Pirates ride for years, I really loved this movie and look forward to the remainder of the series. A wonderful night of entertainment.

Highly recommend this movie! The cast was wonderful and the effects were fantastic! Very funny at parts, and really kept your attention. But if you haven't seen the first one, you should watch that one before watching this one, so you will understand it better.

Perfect casting and realistic costumes make this movie interesting. Johnny Depp and Kiera Knightly work great together. The scenery warms you and the action keeps you involved in the movie. Definately lended itself to a sequel. Disney went beyond with this film to reach adults as well as children.

Pirates of the Carribean was was fun and entertaining film. I loved the costumes and the cast was perfectly selected. This is one of our most watched DVD'd and is my husbands favorite. We can't wait for the new movie to come out to continue the story!

A Must Watch, Must own movie.

Well, what can i say i think Capt'n Sparrow is just Sexy and funny. The moment i saw him step of the sinking ship i knew he was just too much! I can be drepressed ans watch this and laugh at Sparrow, Pintel and Ragettii and all is right again.
Great story line and action just keeps it coming. Enough history in it to make you want to do research after it is over.
And then there is Capt'n sparrow.. God who would WANT to be rescued when you have him on the beach 1/2 lit dancing around a bon fire. The price of the movie is enough to watch orlando try to imitate Johnny's fey~ness when he comments "so that's why he like" and then acts out the drunken Fey foppish act...

What can i say I am smitten.

Probably the best pirate movie to date. And it is not only a pirate story because the ‘curse’ thing brings another dimension to the film – which the CGI craft renders dazzlingly. There is love, distant adventures on dream-like seas, islands and harbors, a lot of ferocious battles along the way, and as many twists and turns in the script.

The tone (and directing) is light-hearted and heroic, unpredictable and definitely spectacular. It’s not only a wonderful entertainment, it is even witty and spirited. And of course, and foremost, with his creative sensitivity Johnny Depp brings the most exquisitely peculiar pirate ever seen on screen. ‘Savvy?’

I don’t say that very often (because it is each to his own taste) but I believe if you seek a right down good enjoyable time before the screen, this one is really not to be missed.

This movie was a very plesant surprise when I first saw it when it was released. I thought it would be boring and cheesey, but it turned out to become one of my favorites. Johnny Depp did an excellent job as being Captain Jack Sparrow. Keira Knightly is gorgeous as she is talented. Orlando Bloom is better than his previous elf role in Lord of the Rings. The movie has a solid plot that will keep you entertained until the end.
