The Pirate Movie (DVD, 2005)

If you like cheesy funny pirate movies than this is the one for you. I liked watching it when I grew up and now I can watch it anytime.

I use to watch this movie all of the time as a child with my sister. Faithfully. We had been looking for it forever and could not find it. Could not believe that I found not one but two of them on Ebay and Bought both of them. Great Price too.

If you like musicals with sword fighting then this movie is for you. Oh yes my peeps let us not forget about kristy McNichol and her solid performance. No blood and guts in this 80's hot item, sorry.

This movie is as campy as they get. But it was a favorite of mine when I was a teen. It is a must have for any campy 80's collection.

How can you describe this film? Based in part on the Gilbert & Sullivan play "The Pirates of Penzance", this early 80's adaptation adds a bit of early 80's pop music mixed with the traditional theme of the play. When this movie was being made in Australia in 1982, producers were aware that there was also an american film adaptation of the same play being brought to the screen, so they rushed to get it into the theaters first, as a means for it not to get lost in the shuffle. It bombed anyway, but has developed a sort of cult following with the same people who loved "Xanadu" and "Grease 2".

Having popular young actors Kristy McNichol and Chris Atkins helped to appeal to younger girls who in turn have become the fans of the movie today.
Kristy McNichol plays the part of Mabel (Mabel?), an ugly ducking who becomes smitten with a young man (Akins) she meets at a swordfighting demonstration during Pirate Day at the local marina. He casually invites her and a few of her friends to go boating the next day. Well, her friends wind up ditching her and in her pursuit to catch up with them in her little sailboat, she winds up getting knocked overboard and....here comes the dream sequence.

In the dream she plays Mabel, the daughter of a Major General who dreams of finding true love. unfortunately, due to a family tradition, she can't get married until all 13 of her sisters are married before her. All the meanwhile, on the pirate ship, we meet Frederic (without a K), who after his parents were killed by pirates, was rescued by the Pirates of Penzance and was brought up to be a pirate apprentice to the pirate king. Upon his 21st birthday when he earns his freedom, he decides to go out on his own and find true love himself and vows revenge to kill the pirates who left him an orphan.

Long story short, he meets Mabel, they fall in love, her dad freaks out because he's a pirate, a little twist of fate has Frederic returning to his band of pirates to serve his duty, and as Mabel and her sisters fight for their freedom from the invading pirates, Mabel and Frederic become unwilling enemies. All this is mixed in with some cheesy 80's pop songs, "How can I live without her?" and "Pumping and Blowing" (if that's not a sexual metaphor, I don't know what is!) and some rather amusing jokes here and there.

This isn't Academy material. Nowhere near, but it's a good movie for a rainy Sunday afternoon. It's definitely a little bit of nostalgia for anyone who loves 80's movies. Have a double feature of this and "Xanadu" and you'll swear it's 1982!

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it in 1981. I think this movie is totally corny, cute, and catchy. I love the first-love story between the sexy Christopher Atkins and the geeky Kristy McNichol. I always wanted to wear the same cute little sexy dresses like Kristy does throughout the entire movie. The music scores in the movie are beautifully done and fit perfectly in the film. This is a cute, comical & clean must see movie!!!

I am so glad I found it...I love this movie since I was a kid and when I saw it on e-bay....I just had to have it and it was delivered very fast!

A MUST SEE!!! This movie "jollied my roger!" The cinematography and choreography was amazingly exceptional, the best I have seen bar none to date!

I loved this movie when I was a kid, and after watching it again, it's amazing how many of the lines I remembered!!! This is not an academy award winning movie by any means, but the underlying jokes are hilarious and I still enjoy the soundtrack. I grew up wanting to be just like Kristy McNichol, and what girl didn't think Christopher Atkins was hot. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who grew up in the 80's and likes slapstick humor.

I love this movie. It was one of the forbidden pleasures from my teen hood. I think that this movie is totally corny, how many pirates do you know brake out into song? I also like the love story between the sexy Christopher Atkins and the geeky Kristi McNicol. I always wanted to ware those little sexy dresses like Kristy wore in my teenage days, but they only work in the movies. This movie is a silly, light hearted movie that reminds me of my much younger day that I still enjoy as an adult.

This is a great movie for girls...kind of like an 80's High School Musical only with some adult language & scenes. Nothing too bad but I would say 12 or older. My kids they love it!

Great movie..Some very corny but deffently a must have for any 80's collector. Affects and jokes off of other movies really make this a true collector item.

Its a cute 80's movie musical. I decided to buy because I saw it years ago and wanted it. The singing is ok but its more of a comedy. Its very cute.

This movie is a little corny but it is awesome. It is a musical based on a dream haven't we all had a corny dream before?

I'd seen this movie years ago when it first came out. I loved it then, and it's still just as funny now. I decided to buy it because it's just an entertaining movie no matter how many times you've seen it.

A frolicking good time! A 80's classic that is a must see! Better then all those movies that I don't like, for sure.

Very funny movie. You watch it thinking it is a "Disney" movie because of the costumes and the colors, but it is definately not a "Disney" movie with the way they talk. Watch it and you will be laughing too.

Funny in a cheezey sort of way. Great costume designer and locating setting. The actors did a good job with the script they were given. Good for familys or a pirate theme party.

I Bought this movie on ebay and it was my 1st time ever watching it. I didn't get the pleasure seeing this when it 1st came out. All in all it was a fun movie to watch. I Highly recommend it for all Kristy Mcnichol fans.
