Synopsis A young African-American man addicted to crack cocaine and on trial for murder recounts the events that led to his arrest--which he claims is wrongful. His attempts to prove his innocence are, of course, in vain. Jones's novel is a strong indictment of "the system," and of the difficulties faced by young impoverished black men when they are caught in it.

Publisher's Note The murder of a career politician with a reputation for exposing and punishing corruption could lead to the biggest scandal in Philadelphia history when it is discovered that the man had been the victim of blackmail and that the police commanders responsible for finding his killer could be the prime suspects in the crime.
Industry Reviews "Despite occasional descents into melodrama, PIPE DREAM is the work of a talented newcomer passionate about his material. An impressive debut--and a writer to watch." Kirkus Reviews (05/15/2001)
"Good cops, bad cops--all of them regulation cardboard--are the novel's problem, for they overrun not only the city in their manhunt for Black and Leroy but also any real exploration of what it feels like to be imprisoned and liberated at the same time....Black and Leroy have promise, but the contrivances of the whodunit don't allow us really to see what compels them to opt out from the world beyond the crack lines." New York Times Book Review - Barbara Sutton (07/29/2001)
