4th Gen. BR Player Finally Shows Format's Potential

This new player finally shows the potential of Blu-Ray for both video and audio quality. Essentially identical to the Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD, the player passes 1080p at 24 fps to compatible displays via HDMI 1.3a. It also uses Wolfson DAC's to produce superior sound quality via it's analog outputs to my Sony TA-P9000ES 5.1 preamp.
Overall a HUGE improvement over my Pioneer Elite BDP-94HD in picture and sound, and comparable build quality to the famed Pioneer Elite DV-38a. Highly recommended.

This unit is amazing. I have a LCD TV 52" SONY Bravia and this Blu-ray player makes the most of it. Picture and sound are wonderful and you don't really want to watch less quality after that.Even the old DVDs seem to become more alive and 3D. I'm sure that this blu-ray player, which is made in Japan by the way, can compete with the overpriced Denon or Marantz at any time. I had other Bluray players, Sony, LG,Panasonic but this Pioneer BDP-51FD is a class above all of them.

It's pioneer ! Great BD player !

Takes around 40 sec to open and get ready.
Takes another 30-40 sec to load.

Very silent. Very great quality for a 2008 - 500$ player paid around 225$ in mid 2009.

Overall if you are patient avec want a very better player than current 225$ one, this is a great buy.

A great unit and verry happy with it (run on Sharp Aquos LCD 42, plugged with Audioquest HDMI-3 cable)

  Absolutely Stunning!!!

I have owned numerous DVD players over the years and still have a Pioneer Elite DV-37 ($1000.00 in 2002) which works perfectly. I decided to buy the BDP-51fd based upon positive reviews in Stereophile and What Hi-Fi!. There have been reports of these units being a little "buggy" but I believe that most of those issues have been sorted out.

Now for my experience with this player. Unbelievable!!! The picture quality is just outstanding. Color rendition is the best that I have ever seen, so good in fact that it makes other blu-ray players I have auditioned seem unworthy to mention in the same breath. It has numerous sound and picture adjustments to allow for fine tuning to your preference. The menus are well layed out and they give you the feeling that you are dealing with a professional level product. The sound quality from the 2 channel analog outputs is amazing. The Wolfson D/A converters are the real deal. I dare say that unless you are the owner of a truly upper level CD player ($1000+) that this will be the best CD player that you have ever owned.

This unit rates as one of the finest bargains in the Audio/Video universe. That it can be had new for $300.00 borders on ludicrous. The only way that you will not be able to appreciate how good this is is if your supporting components are the weak link. I am using this as my CD player in a system consisting of a Krell HTS surround processor and Bryston ST series amplification pushing Dynaudio Contour speakers and though the Pioneer costs just a fraction of the price of my other equipment you would never guess it by its beautiful build quality, gorgeous picture and very refined sound.

The load time is slow. So what! No blu-ray live. So what! To get better sound and picture WILL cost you $1000.00-$1500.00 end of story. Made in Japan with high quality parts and worth every penny of its original $600.00 price tag.

Advice, buy one now! The replacement model for this is now out and as I knew would happen it is now been "upgraded" with BD live and faster load times. It is also made in Malyasia, been neutered of its Wolfson D/A converters, and has lost about 6 pounds of weight.

The old axiom of "you get what you pay for" is a good rule of thumb but in this case you get many times what you pay for. I will be buying a second one just to have as a back-up.

  Amazing Blu-Ray Player

The picture and sound quality is stunning and the fact that this player has the source direct feature is why I purchased it. The ability to use this feature and pass through both the audio and video untouched to my Denon receiver is wonderful. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a high-end Blu-Ray player that doesn't need the 2.0 Live features and wants only the best picture and sound available.

Beware - review from AMAZON SAYS POOR UNITS OUT THERE
Review created: 09/28/09

two Fox titles. Neither would play. I got a red screen (now known as the Red Screen of Death) when I loaded the discs that said my firmware was not up to date. This was not true, as I had updated to the latest firmware. I wondered if I had defective discs or a defective player.

I called Pioneer, and they were familiar with the problem. They said I could either return the player or send it in to them to have its hardware adjusted. Even though they admit that the problem is theirs, they were adamant that THEY WOULD NOT PAY THE SHIPPING. So, I returned it. Apparently, there are quite a few of these units that will not play Fox titles. It has something to do with the BD+ copy protection on fox discs. Most, though not all of the players are made in Malaysia. I assume that the positive reviews are for older units from Japan.

--EDIT--Since writing this review, Pioneer has come out with a news announcement about the player. Anyone thinking of getting one should visit Pioneer's website. If your player is in a certain range of serial #s, it will be one of the ones affected. I went to a store with a printout of the serial #s, and found one that is free of the problem. So, now I can play all my discs, with awesome sound and video and with great SD DVD upscaling. I highly recommend this player, but beware of the potential problems with some units.

I was unable to change my 3-star review. I would now rate it 4, considering the hassle I went through to get a working player. A working unit is a 5-star product.

---Edit Again---

I ended up returning the second player. It had a problem playing rental discs. The Panasonic BD60 that I bought as a replacement was able to play those same discs with no problem. The video and audio of the Pioneer are stellar, but there are lots of poorly made versions out there of this player. As of now, I would not recommend it.

Has a long load time. From the time it is turned onto being able to start watching the movie is quite a long time (several minutes) I don't know if other blue-rays are like this.

Get one for FREE!!! Have a look at this video first:

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. I wouldn't jeopardize my eBay account status if this was a scam. My feedback is real and I will answer you on any question! Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3 different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use them to get a free PS3 System or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 30 day free trial and it never cost me a penny and I received credit for it the same day). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 8-13 people (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on eBay, and you'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your PS3 System or your selected item for free, I chose the PS3 80gb System. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own personal link after your orders placed.

Step 1: Click this link http://www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4616255
YOU HAVE TO Right Click to COPY & Then PASTE to Address Line)
Step 2: Sign up and chose an account type (Referral is the easiest and best).

Step 3: Complete just 1 offer (like Blockbuster or Stamps.com) and refer up to 13 people to do the same (use eBay! Do what I did, copy my ad).

Step 4: Receive your PS3 System for FREE!!!!!!(Even The Shipping Is Free!!!)

For proof that this is for real, click on the link below. It's the company that is behind everything.

Please take advantage of this offer!!! THANKS!!
