Album Notes
IN THE PINK is a budget-priced compilation of some of the Psychedelic Furs best material. Drawing exclusively on the band's first five albums, it pulls a pair of songs each from three of those albums, three from their self-titled debut, and one from FOREVER NOW. Fans will quibble endlessly as to certain omissions--though why "Pretty in Pink," the song to which IN THE PINK so obviously alludes, is missing is, quite frankly, inexcusable. The thing to keep in mind, however, is that the Furs recorded a lot of amazing material, and nothing here is less than great.
Mars Williams' saxophone is particularly expressive on the album opener, "Shadow in My Heart," while John Ashton's guitar is full of restrained menace. "Mr. Jones" is a straight-ahead rocker, with Richard Butler's voice at its cracking best. "India" and "Pulse" both show the punkier side of the band, while "Fall" displays original sax-man Duncan Kilburn's aggressive style. Meanwhile, both "Here Come Cowboys" and "My Time" display the band's slicker, more commercial side. When you just need one Furs disc for a short road trip, this collection is an excellent compromise, while the rest of their albums remain safely in your home.
