For three years, I played the TaylorMade R7 Quad and the R7 425. After reading a few good reviews, I decided to try the Ping G5. Mind you, I have never been a fan of Ping clubs. Most of their irons remind me of gardening tools, which may not be a bad thing given all the digging going on golf courses these days. In other words, I had to be converted to play with a Ping club. Well, I am now sitting on the front row singing the praises of the Ping G5. Pass the tees and balls, please!
This G5 driver is nothing short of outstanding! You cannot adjust it like the R7s, but you don't need adjustment. You can work it left or right, hit high or low. It gives you a nice, resounding "pop" in the center and it gives you thinner, weaker sounds on miss hits. It has a very generous sweet spot and close gives you good outcomes, too. The little crescent on the crown helps with alignment. It's darn good-looking and it looks great over time. Unlike my R7s, the bottom of the club still has the paint on it. I think the Aldila NV shaft just feels light and perfectly matched for this club. The G5 is long--real long. You can just crush it with this driver and it will scream "He just crushed it!"
Frankly, I would never have guessed I would still have it and love it a year later. Even the Rapture doesn't outrate it in recent reviews. It's the real deal and worth more than the price of admission.
