These clubs can be great for you if you buy the right ones fit for you. Ping helps to make this easier, especially for you folks buying on Ebay, and not in a store. I did the static fit on Ping.com and previously had a local professional fit me dynamically. Because of this, I found the perfect match for me and I'm not afraid to buy them online. The website even tells you which shaft to go with if you know how far you typically hit your 6 iron. I found that by working on tempo and not trying to kill the ball, I am able to gain considerable distance and accuracy over my old irons (Titleist DCI 990) just by using these clubs and slowing it down a bit.

When you buy the proper length and lie, you will be amazed at how much better you strike the ball.

My point is this; get a solid fitting in before you buy any irons. They might be a good deal, but there is a reason Ping fits you to the club.

About the Ping irons. These irons play well. I found it easy to shape shots from right to left. It was a bit more difficult left to right, but I've never been able to do that well anyhow. Because I was able to let the club hit the ball and control my tempo better, the ball flight is consistent and the carry is, too. My accuracy has increased dramatically, as well. Especially from the 8 iron down to the pitching wedge. The shot trajectory is much higher and softer landing with these and I don't get a lot of roll. Again, especially from the 8 iron down.

I attribute a lot of the improvements to the change in my tempo, but I give the Pings the credit for helping me change the tempo of my swing and really feel what I am doing with the shot more than that of other irons I have hit. Mishits are not so bad either. You really have to shank the ball or leave the clubface open to mess a shot up with these.

Expect to pay more for the various graphite shafts. The Ping custom WRX clubs are usually more as well. If you find a set of Pingss with a matching sand wedge, jump on them because the sand wedges are hard to find individually.

A lot of times, the owners name has been applied to the club. I found you can get this off easily with acetone and light sandpaper if it is screened in and not etched. You might ask the seller when this is listed this way.

In addition, if you are not very good at the long irons (2,3, and 4) you may want to look at the G5 hybrids. I have them too. If you hit the ball hard, but typically slice or hook, the hybrids dramatically reduce the mishit effect.

Be careful when bidding. There are some demo clubs floating around out there. Check with the seller for serial numbers as all Ping consumer clubs have them. Pay attention to feedback scores. This is Ebay's barometer of service. I swear by the feedback system.

I hope you found this info helpful.

  THE BEST IRON EVER MADE????????
Review created: 02/14/07(updated 10/02/07)
by:
79 of 79 people found this review helpful.

For their age there is still nothing better!

I can't think of one model of iron that was introduced over 20 years ago and is still being used today by so many. That includes the novice to the touring pro. I am fortunate to own the 35th set of Ping Eye2 irons produced in BeCu Copper (2 to LW). I also have had the opportunity to test or own nearly 60 other sets of irons and the Ping Eye2 with the original non-conforming square grooves are by far the most consistent CAVITY back irons I have ever played!

Some advice! Before you buy get educated!

The only knock I hear about the Eye2 model is they don't carry as well. Nothing could be farther from the truth. These statements are made by those who are just not educated to the Eye2 loft sequence. Go to www.ping.com under iron listing and then check out the link to the classic lists. Compare the specs on the original Eye2 model produced from 1982 to 1990 and compare it to any other manufacturers specs (or Pings specs for their newer irons). You will note that the Eye2 models consistently have a higher loft on every iron. In short when your buddy pulls out his 8 iron and you are pulling out your 7 iron you are both actually hitting the same lofted club. Another example is the original Eye2 SW was at 58 degrees of loft. In most sets today that's the LW.

Some other important advice before you purchase a set of Eye2 model irons go to Pings web site. Under irons check out their classic or vintage listings. You will discover that there were actually 5 different models of Eye2 irons produced from 1982 to March 1990. Do you know which model you are buying? All these models had slightly different cavity designs and some changes in loft and groove construction. Here are the Features and identifying markings:

#1 The Eye2 "V" groove models manufactured from 1982 through Summer 1984, identified by PAT. PENDING in cavity and KARSTEN MFG CORP PHOENIX AZ 85068 U.S.A. upside-down on back of top rail.
#2 The Eye2 Lite models introduced in 1984, identified by PAT. PENDING in cavity and KARSTEN PHOENIX AZ 85068 U.S.A. right-side-up on back of top rail.
#3 The "U" groove models manufactured from Fall 1984 to Fall 1985, identified by U.S. PAT. D276644 OTHERS PEND. in cavity.
#4 The Radiused "U" groove models manufactured from Fall 1985 to March, 1990, identified by U.S. PAT. D276644 and 4.512.577 in cavity.
#5 The rarest of all the "New Eye2" also known as the +NO+ (plus no plus) models with reshaped soles, increased perimeter weighting, less bounce in wedges, and stronger lofts than the original Eye2. These were first introduced in November of 1989 and ran until March 31, 1990. Identified by U.S. Pat. 4.512.577 and 4.621.813 in cavity, club heads produced had no "+" in the cavity.

Ready to buy? Heres what to do. From the Seller request the serial number from the hosel BEFORE you buy and make sure all irons in the set have a matching serial number. If the Seller is not willing to pass on the serial number then pass on the Seller and find another set. I have found that 99% of all Sellers are very good at relaying the serial number information on. With that serial number you can contact Ping Customer Service at 800 474-6434 and they can give you all the information on the set including date of manufacture, original dot or lie code, original shafts, original clubs included in the set and even the original grips. Ping's Customer service is the best I have found. It's worth the call.

Ping Eye 2 Irons - God's gift to the average Golfer
Review created: 04/26/06(updated 11/22/07)

Ping Eye 2 Irons will allow the club to do the work.

A good swing will result in the ball being picked up effortlessly by the club and launched into the proper flight for the club hit. Trajectory of these irons is higher than most. Shots hit off centre (miss-hits) still result in a good shot due to the excellent perimeter weighting.

The club weight itself is just enough to project great club head speed thru the hitting area. Many of the newer models have better; compositions (ie; Br) , better grooves (square grooves are the best for ball control, esp. on your wedges) , and better shafts ( composites help the older and young folks a lot, more whip ).

Of course no club is good without you having the proper grip, set-up, swing, so follow-thru ... take a lesson from a Pro!

Remember when looking at ebay clubs, most used clubs require NEW grips, that is probably the real reason why the person is selling them, they don't feel good anymore ... and new grips will make the old clubs new again, especially when they are very high quality clubs like Ping Eye's.

These clubs are very forgiving and sturdy. I have a set that was flooded in hurricane Katrina and I'm looking to replace them. The heads are OK, but the steel shafts were compromised. Two shafts twisted apart in my hand.

I've hit these and stayed with them and never hit anything else. I love the grooves and they way they feel in your hand. I wouldn't trade these for eye 3's if you gave me $500 dollars. I just love the feel of the eye 2's. not overweighted or built to overcompensate like so many of the new irons. it has a smaller sweet spot. but oh so sweet if you hit it right.

will never want to change. found a great deal on some used ones.

i'm a lefty and hard to find clubs that fit.

  Easy club to hit
Review created: 03/02/09
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought these clubs for my son who is 16 years old and plays to th 25 handicap. His ball striking improved immediately. The club isn't as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as my forged blades are, but they are so easy to hit. Do you want to look good, or play good.

Ever since this club came out, companies have tried to copy it. It was the first cavity back cast club. The cavity back allowed Ping to use perimeter weighting. This allows the club face to resist twisting on mishit shots. Less twisting means more forgiveness, straighter shots, higher ball flight, more distance. The subtle cosmetics the other golf companies use today do not help the golfer as much as they say. The alloys used, and the casting processes have improved consistency in the clubhead, so you don't have clubheads with "hot spots", a common problem in the Tommy Armour 845's released in the early 90's.

It a 20 year design that is a classic. Easy enough for a 30 handicap to play, but designed well enough for a single digit handicapper to have them in his bag. Don't pass on a set that was taken care of. They're an oldie but a goodie.

If you want technology to help your golf game, invest your money into a driver, a hydrid, and a lob wedge. Better yet, get fitted at a shop that can put you on a launch monitor. When you spend that much cash, its a good idea to know that your purchase will actually help you play better.

  ping eye 2 iron set

Ping irons have the hardest metal for their iron heads which equates to better spin. players need spin for control on short shots. Older ping irons do have slightly more loft than current models, thus shorter length, but have quality control. Lighter heads with stiff shafts create control.

  Back to the Future?

Buying a set of Ping Eye 2 irons is like going back to the future. Having played the best golf of my life 15 years ago with a set of these, and playing poorly this year, I decided to give them a try. Despite having maybe 5 or 6 sets of irons in the interim, it's hard to beat the playability and enjoyment of these irons. It bought back many fine memories and shots as I took them out for a try when they arrived. It was sad to learn that the poor play unfortunately was not a result of the clubs, but perhaps the player. It was nice to put the old clubs in my hands and have them in the bag. One thing to look at is that the lofts of the irons are considerably less than todays irons. In general, you have to take one more iron on every shot.

I purchased this set of Ping clubs because of the item description and buy-it-now price. When I received the clubs I was disappointed in the mis-represented condition. I beleive this is a case of lack of knowledge on the seller's part about the item they were selling. The seller used a 0-10 rating system in which they rated the clubs way higher than they actually were. The grips were glossy smooth and the club faces have seen a great amount of use resulting in tremendous groove wear. I just beleive the seller had very little knowledge about used golf clubs (I'm giving the seller the benifit of doubt). I will still use the clubs until I find a better set for that price. Final word for sellers: Know your product and represent it accurately; also reply to email questions promptly! Final word for buyers: Ask specific questions before you bid! I love eBay!

  Ping Eye-2 Square Groove Irons
Review created: 10/07/06(updated 11/25/06)
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased my Ping eye-2 irons off of E-Bay for $300.00. The set includes the 3 iron through the pitching wedge. I am 6' tall so the clubs are green dot which is 2 degrees upright. Black dots are the standard. These irons are very forgiving and give you a confident feeling at address. You can send the clubs to the Ping factory for the adjustment that best fits you or you can have a golf shop do it. The Ping factory will replace the shaft labels free of charge. The Ping Eye-2 plus irons have a little stronger loft that the regular Eye-2's. But if you want the best of both worlds, find you a set of Ping Eye-2 plus-no-plus irons, these are very valuable and were only made for about 3 months. The best thing about the Ping Eye-2 irons is that they hold their value if you decide to resell them. They sell better if all of the serial numbers stamped on them match. These clubs have square grooves that put a lot of spin on the ball. Some of the pros are still using these irons. Thanks for reading. Randall

Ping Eye 2 Black Dot Irons
Review created: 07/10/06

2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have been golfing for a few years with a basic cheap set of clubs you might buy as a combo from a sporting goods store. I decided I wanted to upgrade but didn't want to spend the money on a really expensive set. I did some research and found that The Ping Eye2 were a pretty good club that could be had for a reasonable price. Also I think that a nice set like this can last you throughout most of your average golf career.

After hitting just a few balls at the range with these I could immediately tell a difference. It seemed like a much smoother and easier swing, and the balls went closer to where I wanted them to go.

So to sum it up I'm very happy with this set of irons and would recomend them to anyone looking to upgrade.

  Easiest Club to hit
Review created: 05/01/09

Duh, the Ping Eye2's are the best "forgiving" club EVER. CAN'T HIT IT CROOKED!! Hard to work the ball, but if you're good enough to work it, you're good enough to NOT HAVE TO with these clubs. If I miss feeling a missed shot, I'll play my Apex Blades for awhile, then go back to the 2's and play even better.

I've hit 'em all, every club made to date, & the 2's still dominate forgiveness. Set-up may be an issue, they're a progressive offset. But I play normally with zero offset, so all I do is simply adjust for the offset, and hit boring 1-3 yard draws.

Best "forgiving" club to date.

Ping Eye 2 Beryllium Copper Irons

The Ping Eye 2 irons were ahead of their times. Having owned/tried several sets of clubs, my favorite clubs are Ping's. The Eye 2 Beryllium are high quality clubs with an unmatched feel. I alternate between the newer G5, ISI, and Eye 2 irons. If I had to pick one, I pick the Eye 2's which are the oldest of the three irons. Like fine wine, vintage Ping irons, if taken care of, are the best to enjoy.

Ping Eye 2 black dot iron golf club set

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have used a set of hollow back TaylorMade clubs for many years and I had a chance to use a friends Ping clubs and was very impressed with the degree of control, and they are very forgiving. I decided to look for a "vintage" set of square groove Pings since I do a pretty good job of stopping a ball quickly on the green with my backspin and the square grooves develop backspin very well. This was a complete set of 3-PW and they are in good condition, particularly the square grooves are still in very good condition. The grips are new and the clubs cleaned up quite nicely. I am enjoying the new "old" clubs and my score has dropped 3 to 4 strokes since I started using them.

I did my homework before buying these clubs. I researched and asked everyone I knew about clubs. These clubs kept coming up as some of the highest rated, and most beloved by players. I am relatively new to the game, but I wanted to get some good clubs without spending a lot of money. I picked mine up for under $150. (which is a steal!) These clubs have been great in helping me learn the game. One thing to point out is that they do have a smaller club head than most clubs, which I thought would be a bad thing, but it actually has helped my game.

Wow, what a set of clubs! Mine are the original Eye 2's with black dots, and I have never hit a set of clubs with more forgiveness and better feel. The lofts are a bit weaker than my former clubs, but you can just refigure your distances accordingly. I can hit these ckubs so much higher and straighter than my old clubs (Tommy Armour 845) that it is amazing. That being said, I am finding that low "punch out" shots are difficult for me. I don't think you can go wrong with these clubs.

  Going back to the originals...

No hoops or surprises here. These are just good basic clubs. Given their basic cavity, they perform well. I find that I can correct for fade fairly easily and hit these totally on line too.

I re-gripped mine and I love the addition. I can hold them loosely and feel comfortable without sending the club off into orbit.

They definitely have a high club-head speed so I found myself relaxing on my swing... If I pushed them, they sliced...

Basically, if you're a basic-good golfer with a predictable swing; these rock! If you're a beginner...expect some lag time. I usually shoot a 86-96 on any given day and these don't take anything away.

If you can find them for a good price...get them!!! They will improve your basic game and make you more consistent...
