Album Notes U-Ziq: Michael Paradinas. Additional personnel: Frank Naughton (bass). On any given day, Mike Paradinas could be calling himself Kid Spatula, Jake Slazenger, Tusken Raiders, or Gary Moscheles. But it is to the Mu-Ziq" name that he most often returns, ever broadening the vocabulary and palette of electronic dance music. In other hands, such an incongruous mixture of stylized melodies, tinny pots-and-pans drum machine gabble, and cheesy-listening sass would be indigestible. With his gastronome's gift for flavoring, Paradinas instead ladles up serving after serving of supremely tasty and satisfying ragout. IN PINE EFFECT's beguiling flavors range from the polyrhythmic zing of "Within A Sound" to the enticing delicacy of "Phiesope," a Casiotone triphop fantasia improvised around the acoustic guitar and cello hook of Kristen Hersh's "Your Ghost." Even "Mr. Angry," an objectionable gratin of hackle-raising screams and gnashing noises, will have its enthusiasts--probably the same intrepid souls who scarf habanero chilies. Those with more nuanced palates will find much to savor in the sophisticated interplay of mouthwatering melt-away melodies and crispy rhythms in "Roy Castle," "Old Fun #1," "Melancho," and "Problematic." The effervescent "Pine Effect," "Dauphine," and "Iced Jem" dance across the tongue, washing down another rich mu-ziqal repast like sparkling champagne.
Editorial Reviews 6 (out of 10) - ...build[s] tracks from unlikely sources....U-Ziq's got a music hall sense of melody--some of these tracks could back up Petula Clark if he slowed 'em up and muted the blitzkrieg snare blasts....more of a cool blueprint than a fabulous building... Spin (02/01/1996)
...whereas the Aphex Twin's topographical doodles suggest undiscovered, unpeopled planets of techno, U-Ziq's approach is a good deal more emotional....This is techno elevated above the mere functionalism of the dancefloor, lighting fires in the heart and painting pictures for the mind's eye. Melody Maker (10/14/1995)
...fall somewhere between hyperkinetic jungle and seismically hyped-up techno....an amusement park of moods that range from haunted house to fun house... Option (03/01/1996)
...It's [the] creative conflation of sonic elements along with Paradinas' unerring melodic sense, command of complex rhythms, and through-your-face metallic textures that make his work so riveting. Alternative Press (12/01/1995)
