Album Notes Personnel: Max Roach (drums); Odean Pope (tenor saxophone); Cecil Bridgewater (trumpet); Calvin Hill (acoustic bass). Max Roach and company embark upon an experimental musical journey on PICTURES IN A FRAME, a set that both harks back to Roach's hard bop roots and attempts to create a new aural landscape defying, as he puts it, "staid traditions." The album is filled with many virtuoso and highly melodic drum solos, as well as imaginative solos from trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater and saxophonist Odean Pope. Perhaps the most intriguing selections on PICTURES IN A FRAME are "A Place of Truth" and "Ode From a Black Picture Show," which feature Roach on piano. On the latter, he even sings a heartrending lyric ("When my heart began to bleed, 'twas death and death and death indeed") in his raw, yearning vocal style. PICTURES IN A FRAME is one of the legendary drummer's most riveting '70s releases. | See an error? Submit a change request | ||||||||||
