More Eclectic Than Essential

Tori Amos has provided a unique voice for women for the past eighteen years, and here collects eighty tracks from throughout her carreer, including a dozen previously unreleased tracks.
Gems such as "Dolphin Song," "Take Me With You," "Never Seen Blue," and previously unavailable versions of "Crucify" and "a sorta fairytale" are enough to recommend this box set to anyone who is familiar with her work. However, this collection does not quite cover all the ground it should.
First, I would commend the packaging. The cover of the box itself is a set of piano keys. The booklet included contains great pictures and reflections on many of the songs, especially the unreleased stuff. And the discs are divided up pretty well. This makes it a great collector's item.
But, when it comes to the songs themselves, I have some issues. One issue is that this set leaves out some songs that one might expect to find. Soundtrack songs and certain b-sides are left off to make room for multiple versions of some tracks. Another issue is that Tori's post 2000 material is only slightly represented here. Without "Carnival," "London Girls," or "Sleeps With Butterflies," this set leaves me wanting.
My bottom line advice is long time fans should check this out, if only for the stuff that is not otherwise available. But I would advise starting elsewhere if you haven't experienced Tori Amos before. Her "Tales of a Librarian" collection is a single disc set that covers a lot. Studio releases such as "The Beekeeper" or "Boys For Pele" are also excellent.
Tori Amos is one of the great singer-songwriters of our time. This box set confirms that. I just wish it would have confirmed this fact more fully.
