Essential Skills, Too Complicated
Review created: 02/21/08(updated 02/21/08)

This seems like a good reference book . . . at first. Nicely laid out, lots of illustrations, tutorial cd, website support. I have a number of other books on CS2, but there's always room for one more . . . if it works. I decided to try the fairly simple exercise of converting a color photo to sepia. After following the many steps, and not happy with the final color tone, I referred to Katrin Eismann's Restoration and Retouching to follow a much simpler tutorial, with better end results.
There are authors whose work I prefer, among them Katrin Eismann and Scott Kelby. Scott Kelby's books are straight-forward and cover a wide range of topics, while two of Katrin's books explore Masking and Compositing and Restoration and Retouching exclusively.
It's impressive to thumb through, but with so many photos to work with, I want something simpler, quicker and easier to remember so I don't have to constantly refer to the book for directions.
