Philips DVP642 DVD Player

This is one exceptional DVD player. It has been on the market for quite some time now, earning the title 'old and venerable' on many sites, and for good reason. With only a few exceptions, this player will play everything you can throw at it. VCD, MP3 DVD, DivX, photo CD, hybrid CD, any format of recordable, plays without a hitch.

The remote is not as intuitive as some, but it is easy enough to get used to. The output is exceptional. The unit is durable, with few complaints about repairs or breakdowns. It is slim and physically attractive, has enough on-unit controls to allow you to operate the device without the remote. It is quiet and relatively cool running - it does not draw attention to itself in enclosed areas like entertainment centers.

It is priced more reasonably than a whole lot of other units that won't perform half as well or play half as much.

This is a universally highly regarded player that will handle the playback requirements of all but the most advanced enthusiasts, and won't break the bank while doing it. It is difficult if not impossible to come up with any real complaints about this unit, especially when considering it in the context of the other players in it's price range.

I bought this player because it was region indiscriminate. I bought DVDs from Amazon UK and could not play them on my old DVD player. The Phililps DVP642 DVD Player can be programed to play DVDs from any Region. The player works beautifully, I'm happy with it.

Ok. I have to admit, the thing is awesome. I haven't found a disc that this thing won't play. VCD. DVD MP3 CD movies saved as data files....you name it....and its DivX compatible....I love the thing....I think the only thing i would caution against is being swindled into paying more for a "region free" version of this product. because all tey do is enter a code for you or send you the instructions to do it yourself with your remote to play any region discs. with just a little poking around on the internet you can find this code for free...just google "region free code DVP642" and i'm sure you will get many hits. and also it automatically comes ready to play both NTSC and PAL formats without any codes or alteration. So buy wisely....dont pay more for what you dont need to pay for....other than that L*O*V*E****T*H*I*S****D*V*D***P*L*A*Y*E*R!!!!!!!!!!

Very good quality and fitures. The price is exelent. Easy to use. And very important that it plays all regions DVDs. Good disigned and easy to use the remote control. Compact and good looking player.

It's a great slim and cheap DVD player which plays EVERY DVD I have from every country. It plays DVDs from Australia (Region 4) as well as from Europe (Region 2 and PAL System) because it has a integrated converter which changes the signal from PAL to NTSC (or NTSC to PAL) so you can use it on every normal TV.

I recently bought the Philips DVP642 DVD Player for its features as a single disc CD/DVD player. It has an easy-to-use remote, digital output, and easily interfaces with my other components. The spatial effects are a plus for some recordings and much appreciated. It is compact, stylish, and functions flawlessly. Included instruction manual is easy to follow. I would highly recommend this product for a single disc player.

I love these players and their ability to play anything, especially AVI, Divx, and Xivd files, though I must warn people that they are built pretty cheaply and have a tendency to break down after a while. Had mine for about a year before it died on me, and after searching the net, found out thousands of others have the same problem. But they are inexpensive enough to be almost disposable. Bought me a new one already!

The reason I bid and paid for this item was I download alot of movies that are Divx style and my current player doesnt play that format. This player did and it being Phillips (my favorite brand) I had to have it. Little did I know it was going to be a scam! The seller even notified the post office of the package! After various e-mails to the seller and negative feedback through e-bay and no response I pretty much gave up on the whole thing . Those kind of people are going to ruin the fun of E-Bay for everyone.

I purchased the Philips DVP642 for the sole purpose of playing DIVX movies that I have several of...the description stated it would play all regions and disks.When I tried to play these movies it stated from the information on the screen the it did not have the capibility to play the DIVX format from the movies I had...I don't think there was a problem with the player but the way it was advertised!

I bought this same DVD player at a popular electronics store. Sad to say it stopped working about 4 months after purchasing it. I can't say it will happen to all of them but...I know I wouldn't buy another. Even on ebay for $25 bucks. Gl with yours if you decide to get one!

i bought 2 of them for gift and i already have one , they are working find and i have no complaint . it'a a good product!

If you notice this is the second one of the same item that I have bought from this seller. The first one was exactly what I wanted, knowing what I had a good friend when told about this item wanted one also. The product is a great item that you can watch any DVD even foreign DVD's. I would not only recomend this seller but the product also.

I bought this DVD player because in the ad. was multy region when i received it
it was region 1 so we could not use this player and send it back our our cost.

I've owned two of these players. I have a lot of varied content and the Philips DVP642 plays almost everything. HINT: if you have an avi that seems pixelated, press the system menu button (not the DVD menu) and then press Close Menu. The problem goes away! (I stumbled across that one by accident.) I burned one out by letting it stay on Pause for several days -- the next time I used it, it made the cutest chirping sounds and refused to play anything. There are a lot of hacks out there that upgrade the firmware to give the unit more functionality. Like I read once, if you have DVD player problems, then go get a cheaper DVD player. This one is both inexpensive and just about perfect.

Read so many good reviews, I purchased 2 of these! Have had them for a few months now and not a single problem :o) Easy to set up, easy to use, plays everything it says it does and it has great menu options (which include Parental Lockouts on movie ratings). A bit noisier than some of the other players I've had, but really not bad at all (I have it in an entertainment center about 10' from my couch and I don't hear it at all when I'm on the couch watching a movie). An excellent value for your money!!
