Happy, but did not last

I was generally happy with this player, once I had figured out how to set it to region 0. I only used the HDMI output. The quality of the upscaled image was ok (not as good as when I let the Pioneer receiver do the upscaling).
This morning I found the player with a DVD in the open tray, and it would not power up. I could not get either of the kids to admit to being the last person who used it, so I don't know what exactly happened. I opened it, checked the fuse, and checked that the DSP board had power, which was the case. The transformer warmed up a bit when connected to power. But the display remained dark, and no matter what I tried, it would not respond to any buttons.
Given that some people are selling the unit "as is" here on Ebay with what seems to be the same issue, I would caution the prospective buyer of a potential reliability issue with this model. This is not a trivial problem to fix, and without the proper equipment and lots of dedication, it is not worth the time. I will buy another one, however, because I can't really expect more for the price of 2 DVDs.
