Best DVD Player I ever had

This DVD player plays DIVX, AVI, MP4, everything I could throw at it, and it upconverts, with an HDMI output. Good remote, NICE USB function on the front to play movies right off of the computer without even having to burn them. OUTSTANDING! Get you one!

The product was okay, I kept having problem with the hdmi audio and had to reset it about every time. The seller told me to deal with the manufacture, which is annoying.

Quality DVD player filled with features

This DVD player had everything I needed. It is region free so you can play PAL encoded movies. It also has a USB port from which you can view picture slide shows, play music, or watch videos from a flash drive. Also, it upconverts so standard DVD's look great on an HDTV. This DVD player does pretty much everything. The only thing it lacks is an optical audio output, but it does have HDMI, so if you have a new receiver you are all set. The interface to access the USB drive is not great, but overall this is an excellent product.

  The Phillips DVD player
Review created: 04/07/08(updated 04/07/08)
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this unit for one specific purpose - to play DVDs I purchase on Ebay from other countries. This creates a problem, because these DVDs are set to a different region code than those of the U.S. and North America.
There’s nothing illegal about buying and owning DVDs from other countries, but the entertainment industry has mandated that DVD players sold in the U.S. are set to "Region 1" and will only play DVDs from this region.
I enjoy English and German DVDs, which are Region 2.

Some research indicated this particular player could be (legally) reset to Region 0, which means it will play any DVD from anywhere in the world.

Why should I let some Hollywood Fat Cats tell me what I can and cannot watch? Americans enjoy the right to read, watch and listen to any material from anywhere in the world without restriction.

The DVD player is a solid unit and I purchased it on Ebay for a very good price. It was advertised as "refurbished" but looked like new and was packaged like a new unit. Many factory returns are in reality new units that customers ship back because they do not know how to use them.
The instruction manual was helpful and the remote worked perfectly. Phillips remotes are bit clunky - you sometimes have to enter your selection twice, but once you get used to this, no problem.

To accomplish my purchase, I had to reset the region code to Region 0 by using the menu and remote. The manual does not tell you how to do this, but instructions are available free from many websites. The procedure is not difficult, but requires a number of steps taken in the right sequence.

At the end - voila!. Player set to Region 0. I can watch DVDs in any language from anywhere in the world.

This player is worth its weight in gold.

Get one for FREE!!! Have a look at this video first:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFKYVE__Mug

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). The best offer to do is STAMPS.com. Its free, all you need to do is register and follow the instructions. And you’re on your way to your free prize for just completing this offer!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use them to get a free PS3, flat screen TV, ipod or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 4 week free trial and it is free! I don’t have to do anything with it). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 5-14 people or friends (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on eBay or any other message board, and you'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your selected item for free. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own personal link after your orders placed.

Step 1: http://www.YourFreeFlatscreen.com/index.php?ref=4683026

Step 2: Sign up and chose an account type (Referral is the easiest and best).

Step 3: Complete just 1 offer (like Blockbuster or Stamps.com) and refer up to 13 people to do the same (use eBay! Do what I did, copy my ad).

Step 4: Receive your FLAT SCREEN TV, IPOD, PS3, or CASH for FREE!!!!!!!!!! (Even The Shipping Is Free!!!)

  Happy, but did not last
Review created: 06/14/09

I was generally happy with this player, once I had figured out how to set it to region 0. I only used the HDMI output. The quality of the upscaled image was ok (not as good as when I let the Pioneer receiver do the upscaling).
This morning I found the player with a DVD in the open tray, and it would not power up. I could not get either of the kids to admit to being the last person who used it, so I don't know what exactly happened. I opened it, checked the fuse, and checked that the DSP board had power, which was the case. The transformer warmed up a bit when connected to power. But the display remained dark, and no matter what I tried, it would not respond to any buttons.

Given that some people are selling the unit "as is" here on Ebay with what seems to be the same issue, I would caution the prospective buyer of a potential reliability issue with this model. This is not a trivial problem to fix, and without the proper equipment and lots of dedication, it is not worth the time. I will buy another one, however, because I can't really expect more for the price of 2 DVDs.

This player is absolutely wonderful. It's up-converting feature and USB capabilities are fantastic! Plays my AVI files perfectly. The only down side I have found is that it seems a bit slow opening the tray. Other than that it's a wonderful purchase.

This is a really cool player, it has played many different disks ive put in it a few i didnt think it would even read. Its fast too it doesnt take long to fire up and get going. Has a nice upscaler with good features you want from a higher end unit playing files from a USB card is a neat feature to play MP3s or put images on the big screen from a media card.

I purchased this item because of my upgrading to High Definition. There are other players with more features but this one works extremely well and the price was low.It is compact and sleek looking. I can play older types of DVDs and the alomost look as if they are HD also. This is a awsome low cost machine.

Philips DVP5982 does a solid job with video and sound
Review created: 01/08/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I must admit that I have just received a used unit which is about a year old. I was worried that it would not function or be quirky ... to the contrary. Though the unit is older, it had better reviews than the newer model ... why I do not know. I have used several DVDs and CDs in it so far and the video quality in 1080p upconverting is considerably sharper and crisper than normal DVD mode. In fact the 2x zoom mode in 1080p is about the same quality as standard 480i, which is a good way to fill my entire LG 37" LCD screen. In non-zoom 1080p mode the widescreen image is very clear and sharp. Though I am sure that bluray is sharper, I do not feel it has greater emotional impact ... strictly a discussion for videophiles or for people with 65" screens. It plays many difference video and audio formats, but I have not tested those yet. The standard discs tried so far have not skipped or hesitated, whether they were old or new or from the rental fleet (notoriously problematic).
The sound quality on DVDs and CDs using AV cables through an older analog Harmon Kardon amplifier and JBL speakers is satisfying. I have not yet heard it using a digital cable through my newer Denon amp and NHT speakers, though I expect it will be excellent by comparison.
Honestly, I have excellent eyesight and exceptional hearing, and though I can see and hear the difference in high grade equipment compared to a less expensive unit like this, I would suggest that this unit delivers at least 90% of the reproduction quality of a higher grade $500+ unit (I paid $45). Depending on seeing and hearing acuity, I suspect the average person would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Frankly, in the movie theater, while the sound systems are superb, I have noticed that the giant screen is often grainy and blurry... much, much more so than this unit delivers. I for one am glad to save the money by buying this unit and escaping technology overkill.

  Very Nice!
Review created: 01/03/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Very nice dvd player it would have been nice if it was a bit smaller to save some space but it has the great feature which I love is the little usb port which you can put your usb flash drive and view pictures play music watch videos as long as they are .Divx (.avi) format you can play any video the only thing I did not really like is the remote control but my universal remote took care of that. The remote that comes with it does not have the fast forward/rewind feature you can only skip through chapters on the dvd but like I said if you have a universal remote that can support this dvd player then your good to go! I would recommend this to others and the price is great as well.

WOW thats a great upscaling dvd, it also plays DviX movies and usb files on your TV like Photos. My HDTV never looks better. I trow my Sony HD DVD is no good because the region restrictions and the best thig with this unlock region DVD is that you can see whatever you whant to see. Forget $$$ on Blue Rays, be smart and buy a low price HD DVD like this

  Good divX player to buy
Review created: 12/07/08

We have one already and I bought this one for another room. Can play almost all formats that an average person will be playing (if you're technically advanced you're probably not reading this review).
The one thing I dislike about it is that you have to turn the player on, wait, and then press eject and wait some more to load the DVD. Otherwise this is a good player for the price.
