This is a fantastic unit. I does all you would want a DVR to do and more because you can dub off your harddrive onto a DVD whenever you want. Also Pauses and save live TV just like a DVR.

Although I have to admit, if you record something in standard definition (480i) and play it back with the upgrade 1080P the view is much better, but not quite as good as HD. Although if you record in digital it's pretty darn close. Also, any movies that you rent will be a great show in near HD quality.

The digital tuner onboard actually captured more digital channels off my cable feed than the original cable box, so this too is more bang for your buck. And although the booklet says it only records in 4:3 aspect, it will record in 16:9 aspect if that's what's being fed to the recorder.

All in all you can't go wrong with this unit. Great buy for the bucks.

if you use a roof top antenna for your tv channels this is the CLEAR ticket ! I have two of these and are great for recording shows( his & hers ) in crystal clear picture unlike when recorded to vcr. watch those shows whenever you want in the same high quality picture as the day it was on.
only thing that would make these things better would be universal remote for the tv volume and a second tuner to be able to watch a different channel when recording another ... you can though watch a previously recorded show on the hard drive while it is recording as well . very easy to use , easy to edit and delete commercials/ unwanted parts or fast forward skip chapters.
36hrs-198hrs of recording, just depends how good of picture quality you want HQ , SP , SPP are all great picture quality and you shouldn't ever have to worry about not having enough room for your shows! if you do you need to watch less tv .
anyway I like it , I wanted astc tuner for over-the-air broadcast that recorded to a hard drive with clear digital picture, hdmi output for hdtv & 1080p upconvert for dvd movies to near HD quality ...oh ya, has the ability to pause ,rewind , fast forward live tv like tivo without the fee
thats all the one finger pok'n I can stand , hope it helps one person out there then my job is DONE !

Philips DVDR3575H/37 (160 GB) DVD Recorder / HDD Record

I bought the first unit about a year ago and was very impressed with it, therefore, as I needed another HD recorder, I immediately decided for the same brand and model.
The unit is very reliable and easy to use, especially to program and edit.
Dislike: Unit does not have a TV Guide and it does not allow you to title a program while scheduling the timer. It has to be titled after recording is finished.
Other than that the unit is easy and fast to program and it does everything mentioned in the owner's manual.
Highly recommended.

I wanted to record to a hard drive device without paying for "Tivo" charges each month. This unit does the job very well and let's you burn your recordings to DVD. I would recommend it to anyone. Heck, after I bought mine my Dad bought one too and he loves it!

Best Choice I've Found For a HDD/DVD Recorder
Review created: 09/01/08

I had been shopping for one of these for some time. I did lots of research and price comparisons. I lost several auctions on Ebay for this item, but finally won one. I was so pleased when I received it and started using it. It has to be one of the easiest machines I have used. Being able to record and edit directly on the HDD is great. Then being able to burn that directly onto a DVD internally is awesome. This is like TIVO+++, only without the fees for service. It is VERY user friendly and does everything I was looking for it to do...and then some. You have to be patient and read the manual, which is quite in-depth, but it is well worth it. I'm still learning all the great features. It helps to have some technical knowledge, but if you can stop your old VCR from blinking 12:00, then you can handle this baby. I highly recommend this unit!

  Great machine

I've loved having this machine. I record a lot of television since I'm ususally at work during prime time and hdd recording is a huge upgrade over my old vcr. Timer recording is easy to use, quality is very good at standard mode (which yields over 100 hours of recording space.) Editing seems like it might be a chore, but I don't really use it. As a dvd player it seems good. I have also tested playing files from a portable hard drive (divx, avi, mpeg) and all play nicely. Very cool. This capability is great if you get a lot of content off the net and would rather watch your tv than your (my) little computer monitor. Also has no problem with dvd-rw's which is nice so that you can burn something just to watch and then use again. The remote and on-screen options can be a puzzle (partly just because there's just so many options and fucntions) but it's doable after getting used to them. I have this connected to a 32" Philips hdtv with hdi cable which can give dark images sometimes. I also have component cables hooked up and will just switch to that if I don't like the hdi picture. The tuners on both Philips devices are good, but it seems like the one on the dvr is exceptionally powerful. A cheapish set-top antenna gives me all local digital signals fine. (I'm not using cable or dish.)
Overall good machine if you can find one. It's ability to play video files from your computer is a huge leap forward and it's more basic functions all work well.

This is a great unit with excellent quality recording and playback quality! With the huge hard drive this is like having a TIVO/DVR without the monthly fees! Using the component level connections, the quality is great. I cannot wait until I get my new HDMI cables for the very best quality! Be sure your cable box has component or HDMI outputs. If you use the channel 3 (Co-ax cable connector) you will get dimininished quality video compared to what this unit is capable of. This unit has a ton of great features.

  Great reception with DVR

Tuner brings in digital stations from Cincinnati and Columbus to the Dayton area. The antenna is sitting on top of the TV inside the house. It's like having free cable with so many different channels. Pausing live TV works great. Only down side I see is not having a universal remote to control the TV as well. Overall a very good product.

This recorder has a LOT of storage available. I was using a DVD only machine and was always messing with changing DVDs. The big hard drive solves that and speeds up the response as well.

I also like that I can record one program while watching a previously recorded one. "Pause live TV" mode comes in very handy as well but I keep forgetting exactly how it works. The screen reminds me but a few times I have messed up the recording. Maybe I just need to use it a little more.

I haven't tried dubbing to a DVD yet but that will be a nice feature when I get to it.

It doesn't seem that I can pre-enter a title when setting a timer record - that seems like an oversight in design but it hasn't been an issue. The recorder automatically titles the program with the channel and time it was recorded. You can then change it to whatever you want.

It is especialy nice that there are no monthly payments!

I keep reading that manufacturers are stopping manufacture of hard drive DVD recorders. If you want one, you might want to move on getting this one. The hard drive is absolutely worth the few extra dollars.

Philips DVDR3576H/37 (160 GB) DVD Recorder / HDD Record

It has the basic functions of a video recorder from cable and antenna. But no one should expect the same convenience of a Tivo or DISH PVR. You will need to program the recording time and channel like an old fashioned VCR.

My biggest complaint is the limited capability of the USB device. You can only play JPEG and music files. It does not allow you to play any video files. It is a huge disappointment as my $50 Philips DVD player from Costco supports playing many video formats from a USB device.

First let me point out that the purchase of this unit new from an Ebay dealer saved me over $60.00 vs the same unit on sale at Walmart. The unit works as promised. I have not to date used every feature the unit offers but I have recorded to the Hard Disk(HDD), I have recorded on a DVD and also dubbed from HDD to DVD and the quality of the picture was excellent. The only complaint I have is that the manual is overly complicated in the manner it explains the operation of the unit and its various features.
I would not hesitate to recommend this unit to a friend or family member because it is a quality product that performs up to expectations.

  Poor picture
Review created: 03/09/08
by:
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The features including 160 GB hard drive are all very good but don't really matter because of the poor picture quality. I knew before purchasing that I was buying a recorder that would be taking a true HD signal, down converting the signal to 480 and then up converting back to 1080. What I did not expect was to see such a great loss in picture quality. Additionally, the picture is very dark. I have the recorder connected to a 42" Samsung plasma HDTV using a quality HDMI cable.

I will never use this Philips for normal TV viewing - only for timed recording. Therefore the hard drive feature is of little importance to me. I would recommend saving some bucks and just get a dvd recorder, hopefully one that offers better picture quality.

I would not recommend this unit. It has extemely limited hookup abilities and when it does get setup it has very poor recording image. I'd compare it to even worse than some VCR recorders. I wouldn't buy it.

  DVR with over-air digital tuner
Review created: 03/02/09
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the very, very few dvr's that includes a digital tuner(ATSC) for receiving over-the-air digital transmissions. It allows for pausing live TV, although it would be nice if you could do that while recording another show. The tuner sensitivity is adequate, but not the most sensitive I have seen. Very easy to program recordings, just like a VCR. Has a 30 second skip button, which is great for skipping commercials.

I like having a DVD recorder that I am not tied to a subscription like Tivo. I also like nto paying $5.00 an month for something from my cable company. Yes these may offer more features but I am very happy having the Philips unit. It is easy to use and easy to hook up. I like to 160 GB HDD as it is plenty of capacity for my needs. Recommend it to anyone wanting a DVD recorder with a HDD

I rather enjoy the dvdr. You can record a show and watch a prerecored show at the same time as well as record and watch a dvd at the same time. Once you have all of your shows recorder you can edit them. Such as cutting out the commercials and adding chapters. You can then copy them onto dvds and just like that you have a whole tv series.

The dislikes is that you have to program both the dvdr as well as what you are recording off of. The dvdr doesn't control your channels. It won't change the channels on the cable box or the tv so you must manually put in everything and be on the channel you wat to record on. And you can only watch one thing at a time unless you have a very good spliter.

The dvdr is a great machine with it own harddrive. So you won't have to miss any of your favorite shows and you can also watch live tv and fast forward or pause it. I am a very satisfied customer. The dislikes are outweighted by the benefits. Thanks and enjoy!

Unit not fully functional when it arrived.

When I received this device it looked great. I hooked it up and went through the setup very easily. It found more HD stations than my set top box does using the same antenna feed. Picture was good. However, when I attempted to record a program to the HDD it gave me an error message. I attempted to pause live TV and got the same error message. I called Philips to report the problem, they said that they would send me another unit and instructions on how to return the failing unit. A couple of days later I got a call from them that they did not have any of these units in stock and offered to buy-back my unit. I faxed them my receipt and they paid for the device to be shipped back to them via Fedex. That has been about 2 weeks ago and I still have not seen a check. I purchased a new Philips DVDR3576H/37 from Ebay and I am very satisfied with it. It works great. Editing a program on the HDD is a bit awkward, but that will get easier the more I do it. Set up to record a program is very similar to how it is done on a VCR. I really like being able to set chapter marks and the variable speed fast-forward and rewind. It made it easy to skip the commercials after I got all of the chapter marks set. Simply press the next button when a commercial started and it went right to the next scene. I have used the pause live TV once. It let me pause a show to take care of something, return to the show where I left it, fast-forward through the commercials and eventually catch up with the show and stop the recording. I think I will really like that feature the more I use it.

This is a top notch DVR with excellent recording and playback features. I previously purchased another one of these DVRs on Ebay a while ago and have been enjoying it ever since. The 160 GB HD hard drive makes recording very easy plus you have the ability to dub from the hard drive to DVD. This is really a plus and a feature that I have used several times. You would not be disappointed with this DVR.

DVR defective and also the replacement.

This machine has been replaced under factory warranty and the new machine has the same problem and more.

The factory replacement has color sync problems also plus the clock runs fast. The user must correct the clock a couple of times a day.

This machine will be returned to the factory on Monday.

As a DVR the machine works with relative ease. I do not understand the color sync problems since the other functions are good.

Check back in a couple weeks after the new replacement arrives.
