I purchased this because it had alot of hard drive and at a descent price. I homeschool and record 12 classes a week, the classes range from an hour to 2.5 hrs in length. This dvd recorder has 20 timers to program up to 20 programs. It will record to any dvd format and also playback any format. We recently went out of town and I have 4 weeks of classes still on the hard drive. You can also record straight to dvd or to the hard drive. It has the ability to edit out commercials or any of the program you don't want to be seen on the dvd, you can manually or automatically insert chapters as well as divide into Titles. This dvd recorder also has YesDVD capabilities. All in all this is a great recorder and I have not had any problems with this unti during the time I've had it, and I use it daily to edit, delete, record, burn to dvd etc.

Excellent video recorder with minimal flaws

This DVD recorder's design should be standard for all other recorders. The HDD drive is a very elemental idea but it's extremely useful. You record from the TV signal, analog or digital video, and your clips are stacked on the HDD, where you can do some limited editing (create or delete chapter marks, split titles, etc.) and then select several for accelerated DVD burning.

Picture and sound quality are average good, somewhat fuzzier than other equipment I tested.

You can record video directly to DVD-R or DVD-RW, but this negates many of the benefits of the HDD system. I had another Philips recorder, without HDD, and the recording and editing on disc was very troublesome and problematic.

A very interesting feature is the "live TV" option. In simple words, the recorder is always recording the TV signal on a special area of the HDD, and while you're watching TV, you can go backward in time and view the past content in real time. So you can go as many as 6 hours of previous TV signal, and even start recording from any past point, and the HDD catches on automatically. You can even left the thing recording from one source while viewing the HDD clips or even DVD movies. And no, you can't record from DVD to HDD.

On the DVD side, the remote control and options are far better than previous Philips machines. Now you have dedicated fast forward and reverse buttons, instead of using the cursor keys. The controller layout is way improved.

You even get a USB port for direct playing of MP3 and photos. The photo viewing is slow but at least is present.

There are also several quality levels for recording, measured on how much time you can fit on a 4.7 gb DVD-R. The best level is 1 hour on DVD-R, to the last, 8 hours (but of questionable quality). If your HDD clip doesn't fit on a disc, you can split it on two clips and burn them on separate discs.

The burning operation runs in the background, so you can use the unit as normal until the process is complete.

The major flaws I found on this recorder are:

* No support for recording on double-layer media.
* No folders on the HDD, all your material is stacked in one list. When you have hundreds of clips, it gets impractical.
* The USB feature can only read MP3s and JPGs, no video of any kind is supported for playback from pendrives.
* When you zoom in DVDs, the picture gets a strange ghostly effect, this flaw is also present on all Philips machines. It's very noticeable on characters with green and blue eyes.
* HDD es 160 gb, though not user-replaceable.
* No support for media copying to HDD, so is impractical for archiving video from PC or other source.

The machine has an slim design, has autovolt feature and feature several sets of analog and digital video inputs, antena in and out connectors.

Bottom line: An excellent product, minor flaws, somewhat expensive but worth it. ALL TV-DVD recorders should implement an HDD, is a rather simple but powerful idea.

  A little too quirky

I got this to replace a Tivo box that I have, but I've found it's doesn't measure up to other DVRs I've had:

Cons:
- No integrated program guide. You have to program this one like an old fashioned VCR (channel, date, time, etc). You can't program by title. So, anytime your show isn't on, it still records whatever is on at that time (baseball game, news, whatever).

- It interrupts what you are watching whenever a timer recording starts. I just don't get this one. If you are watching something pre-recorded on the hard drive OR even a DVD, the unit will stop what you are watching 3 minutes before the timer starts recording and will display a warning that it's about to record. You can't go back to your DVD or recorded program until the recording starts. This is the most annoying feature of the unit.

- If you are watching a DVD and the unit interrupts you because it's getting ready to record, there is no way to go directly back to where you were on the DVD. It starts the DVD over from the beginning.

Pros
- Decent picture quality on recorded programs
- Cheap for the amount of HDD space you get
- Nice slim form factor.

Recommendation - Find a newer model with an integrated Program Guide. This is decent if you can put up with the quirks, but there are definitely better things out there.

I purchased this product because I do not have digital cable or satellite at the moment and wanted the ability to record from analog cable and also play DVD's. I may occasionally transfer from hard drive to DVD. My experience with it has been somewhat mixed. The recording quality at high to mid-level is adequate. I suspect it may have a couple bad sectors on the drive as it jumps around occasionally during playback - not often enough to warrant a return, however. Also, if you are watching a recorded show and have another timed recording kick-off, it will boot you out of the show you are watching and you must restart it. That is very annoying. You can record and watch a taped show at the same time, however. The remote has very small buttons, which I do not like at all. The DVD player works well. I did a lot of research before purchasing this device, especially given I did not want to spend over $250 for the DVD recorder. Overall, I would say that it is okay. If you have ever used a DVR or TIVO, you will not be overwhelmed by this product. It does the basics.

i bought this product to record home movies from dv to dvd. it works great for this function and is really easy to use. it has several different inputs which i like a lot. the only draw back that i have found is that it wont record directly from the dvd tray, and the remote must be fairly close to the unit to work properly.

The best thing since Tivo! With out the Fees! "Awesome!

Love this recorder, it records right to dvd or 200 hours of TV! I have used it to back up all my old Home Movies and collection of videos of the kids!... It even lets you use editing programs like "YESVIDEO" to make a DVD, and they turn out great!... This Philips product is AWESOME! I now have one on all my TV's! It works well with my Cable Box! Sorry Tivo but, you need to step down! If you can get one of these items with the built in hard drive, you have a gold mine! Hmm wonder why they are hard to find, Perhaps NO FEES!...
Great Job, Philips you did it again!

P.S. How could I forget the Pause and rewind live TV, Amazing only available the hard rive version! Built in hard drive is a must have! Mostly you can find 60,80 and 160GB hard drives!.. Caution in the VCR combo's one goes out you have to replace the hole unit! Opt. for the one with the USB drive on the front and front RCA hook ups! You could be the next Movie maker Guurooo!
Peace out!...

Use one to record church services live, works well and the hard drive makes it easy to "save" the services until we need to make copies. I bought this one used for home, had to order a remote for it but it will make a great recorder for tv shows and burning them off to watch later (can edit commercials out) also like the 4 inputs so I can hook up 2 cable boxes and a vcr as well as a digital camera to copy from

It's as advertised and I feel way better than a TiVo because unlike that or a cable recorder this is in your home and it does not need a phone line or "report" what you are watching or recording or whose ads you are skipping. I like that because while it's always been denied I am convinced that outside controlled recorders also report what's being recorded, what commercials you skip etc and while I have nothing to hide, I don;t feel my viewing habits are anyone's business. This has none of that danger. Also, this allows you to record, watch and delete or if a show is greatly of interest, record, watch, and then save for good to a DVD you can keep, while you then delete the original file from the recorder, though there is a LOT of space here on the hard drive. It also allows for pausing of live TV and scheduling of recordings, so it's very easy to use and flexible. In all it's a great device without any of the concerns I have had which have kept me from seriously considering TiVo.

After loosing my DVR capabilities do to loss of network television on Satellite TV and went looking for a DVD Recorder with a built in hard drive. After researching many I decided on this one mainly due to price and secondly on funtionality. I have not been disappointed with this unit. While it does have a few quirks that I was aware of before purchasing, all and all it is a very good unit and I would recommend it to anyone with a little tech savy who want to get in on the bottom line.

Philips DVDR3455H/37B (160 GB) DVD Recorder
Review created: 12/02/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Philips DVDR3455H/37B (160 GB) DVD Recorder is a good overall product that allows you to watch TV via a standard analog Cable or RCA input. You have the ability to time skip through shows or commercials. You can record these shows to a Hard Disk drive. You can do basic editing of the shows on the hard drive to divide them into smaller files. You can then transfer then to standard DVD disks for long term storage. You are also able to save any normal personal recordings that you may have and transfer them to standard DVD as well. The device is not High Definition but for normal cable or older video recorders it works well.

It does what it says it will do. Easy to use, great picture, and tons of storage (either in standard def or HD). Burns DVDs quickly. Built-in tuner works great and you are going to need to buy a tuner anyway by February 2009...and this is an HD tuner! Get one.

Wow what can I say! Bought a replacement remote and this thing works better than the Moxi Box I got from the cable company. Only downside is no HDMI connetions and you can only record one program at a time (no dual tuner). Other than that this is the best piece of tech I have purchased to date.

Philips DVR with 160 HDD 3455H/37B
Review created: 03/18/09

This unit works just like a VCR but records on DVD or built in hard drive, your choice. It allows you to edit recordings on the HDD, such as omitting commercials from TV shows or unwanted clips of a program. It lets you set chapter markers and name titles of your recordings. It has connections that allow to transfer VHS tapes to DVD (with aid of "separte" VCR) and edit transfer via HDD if you like. I honestly don't know how I survived without it. If you are big into recording shows and documenting and cataloging your recordings you need this machine or one like it. Even if you are not big into edits and cataloging them this hot little unit records live TV so don't worry about missing another word said during your favorite programming because you can pause live TV for a bathroom break then continue where you left off or rewind to hear what you missed, or just to repeat what you herd. This is one of those things in life where when you finally purchase one you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

  Not good for HD tv
Review created: 05/31/08

0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this unit to keep from having to pay TIVO,or Cox Cablevision a fee. Wrong! This unit does NOT play HD in full format! on page 42 of the instuctions is a NOTE: (in hard to read black on dark gray) The second line in that "Note" sidebar it states "This unit cannot record as aspect 16:9. The 16:9 images will be recorded as 4:3." Well folks I bought this unit because I don't want to play 4:3 on my wide screen Samsung LCD 52" (Model LN-T5265) t.v.! what really sucks it take 16:9 pictures and plays them thru the HDMI cable to the screen as 4:3 aspect- and so small that I can't even get a full screen with the "Zoom" feature of the Samsung! BOOOOO! I thought that I would get a unit that would playback High Definition - both live programs and DVD recordings. The only DVD that I have had the nerve to try in this unit is DVD that I purchase through the History Channel club. I does a fine job on that commercially recorded DVD. I have a problem with the component2 color in my receiver so I can't use it but it does not seem to improve the size of the picture over the HDMI output. I haven't tried to burn a dvd yet so I don't know that much about its operation except that when I purchased this unit I was under the impression that it would "Upconvert" a dvd that was not HD. Not only does it not do that but (see statement above) it DOWNCONVERTS all 16:9 to 4:3. Who needs that? I paid mega bucks for a 52" diagonal screen so I could have a 52 inch picture NOT a square 43" screen! I would throw this thing in the trash but I want to burn a bunch of really old vynil records to dvd then put them on a cd so I can have some of my favorite old music from the 50's, 60's and 70' on a cd that I can play in truck when I travel or run around town. I haven't tried that as yet so I don't know if even that is going to work. Another thing that I hate about this and all new units now days is it has that ding dong copyright protection scheme built into it to protect the selfish and the greedy so that I have to buy their stuff even though I can't afford it and will never put out the money just so that I can have more than one copy. It hasn't occured to those rats that they are cutting off their noses to spite their wimpy faces. It grinds my grits that Phillips goes along with their selfish schemes- but so does the wimps at Sony and all of the rest. The copyright laws have been so warped by the liberal Judges etc. that liberty and the original concept of copyrights has gone out the window.
All I can say kindly about this unit is that it looks very nice. Its pretty. However given the choice I would choose functionality over looks any day.
