Pete's Dragon (DVD, 2001, Gold Collection)

This story of a winsome orphan and his guardian dragon features an Academy Award-nominated score and song, Helen Reddy's "Candle on the Water." The combination of a live-action story with an animated figure was innovative in 1977, and the green dragon with pink wings will still charm youngsters today. However, its plot has the boy running from a nasty family to whom he's been sold into slavery, as well as an evil magician who tries to steal the dragon for his parts. These dark story lines may scare or bore younger children, who only want to see Elliot the dragon belch fire and give Pete rides on his back. And older children who might appreciate the plot may scoff at the relatively crude animation. This leaves a rather narrow audience window of about ages 3 to 7. A cast of veterans includes Shelley Winters, Mickey Rooney, and Red Buttons, who all turn in the hammiest of performances. Acting newcomer Reddy demonstrates both why her acting career never took off and why her singing career did. (Lines like "You're a bunch of superstitious ding-dongs" don't give her much help.) However, her sometimes awkward performance as the lonely lighthouse keeper who gives the boy a home provides the film with its heart. Bottom line: it's a keeper for diehard Disney fans, dragon lovers, and those who remember this movie fondly from their childhood.

I almost forgot about this movie. I hadn't seen it in such a long time. Pete's Dragon hands down has to be my favorite Disney movie of all time. If you were a 70's kid you most likely have watched it. I remember watching it alot as a child, I'm suprized I didn't wear out the VHS tape.

If you haven't gotten the chace to watch it, Pete's Dragon is about an orphan boy and his dragon who escape from his mean, abusive adopted parents. There's more to the story but that's pretty much the plot. I'd hate to give away the movie if you haven't seen it.

I will most definately be adding this DVD to my collection, so when my husband and I finally have kids they will be able to watch this movie. I do have the original VHS at home aswell (which I plan on keeping too).

Like this movie A LOT! Watched it when I was little! I like it because it brings back memories. My parents took my siblings and I to the theater to see this Disney Classic. In fact, my adult siblings and I were just talking about it last week. It's a cute, fun movie for kids. They haven't sat through the entire movie yet. They like what they've seen so far though.

I grew up watching Pete's Dragon and like to watch old movies, so when I couldn't find it at the video store I checked ebay. Culture has changed since this movie was originally filmed, but that's why I like it. There's a couple of bar scenes and Nora's father is a drunk, but its totally innocent and the drunkenness is taken care of, but not condoned by Nora. My favorite part of the movie is that an orphan is taken in and cared for, and imagination is paramount in the movie. People are accepted for who they are by Nora, which is a contrast to the people of Pasamaquede, although this lesson is balanced by the "snake oil salesman" in the film. Nora acts on what she knows is right, without just looking out for her own personal gain; another of the many moral lessons in this movie.
The case of this particular DVD is a thin one without a scene selection paper, which was disappointing, but the DVD itself is more important to me.

They did a great job transferring this movie to DVD. The movie is a wonderful movie that defies the ages, it is still great to watch with my children. My son loves dragons, and was thrilled with this movie! It brings back wonderful memories of my childhood, and the songs came back to me like I just heard them yesterday! Terrific film!

I love this movie, and the reason I do like it so much is because when I was a young girl my Granny had this movie and we watched it over and over again. It's just a good movie for small children. I also bought this movie to show to my special needs children that I teach. They all seem to really enjoy it.

We wanted to purchase a copy of PETE' DRAGON because it is a story of hope in what seems like a hopeless situation. The story-line is easy, for even children, to follow. Conflicts are appropriately resolved. Social problems are tastely addressed, and it has a happy ending. We like the movie.

I love it due to it was one movie that was hard to find. My kids loved when they were growing up as well as I did. Now I have it for my Grandchilderns. I nice to be able to find DVD that are hard to find . Causr I have been trying to replace all of my VHS Movies.

I really loved this movie because of how my daughter reacted to the musical scenes. I decided to buy it because we had a copy that someone else had given us but it skipped and and got stuck in several places.

I bought this for my boys, I remember loving it as a kid and wanted them to experiance it as well. This is a great movie for kids very kid friendly. The animations along with the real people are classic and the whole family enjoys it!

Growing up I always loved to watch Pete Dragon. Now, I am able to have my two children watch the show that I loved to watch. The DVD was shipped fast and that was very nice. I would advise everyone to check this seller out for items. Thanks for all your help and good luck.

Pete`s Dragon is such a great movie, it was 1 of my favorite Disney movies as a child growing up and still is as a mom. My daughter who is 5 thinks it`s ok. I think she`ll like it more when she`s a few years older. I think this movie is better liked by kids over 7. It`s a great family movie to watch, it`s sad, funny, it`s got it all.

While general consensus is that Disney lost its way for a time after Uncle Walt died, "Pete's Dragon" is a winner in the old style. It is full of pleasant imagination, uplifting values, and great entertainment in the form of song, dance, and especially humor. Mickey Rooney and Red Buttons together are the ultimate clown act!

I loved this movie growing up, an my son likes it i had the vhs movie of it.I glad i was able to find it so my son an i can watch it again. My son watched it about 5 times a week.

I had an original one VHS but not a DVD so when I seen it was offered on DVD I ordered it. It is a very cute movie by Disney and I wanted my grandchildren to enjoy it as much as my own children did. A classic. Never get tired of it. This movie can span 4 generations. Im sure It will span many many more. If you havent seen it...Get it. You wount be dissapointed.

It got here fast. My kids loved watching it. The songs in the movie was great my kids was singing along with the songs as best as they could. It is a great kids movie....

This is one of the best movies Disney ever put out. When we were kids they played it on ABC every year... I think at Christmas but I'm not sure. I know The Wizard of Oz was their Thanksgiving movie. Anyway, it's one of those live action movies with an animated dragon named Elliot who you will just fall in love with. There's a group of bad people trying to get to the little boy, Pete, so one of the local women has to keep him safe. It's a good 20 years since I've seen it so I don't remember if she's a school teacher or not. It's got Mickey Rooney in it so you know right off the bat it's gonna be great. There's a love story in there too I think. And a dude toting wonder elixir that has a Dick Dastardly kinda vibe. He wants Elliott. It's all set in a fishing town called Passamaquati, not sure if that's spelled right but hooked on phonics works for me :)

Just see this movie if you can... your kids will love it too! I give it 2 thumbs way up... 5 stars isn't enough... it's beyond a 10! Really!

Cute movie with part live action and part animation. I have adored this movie since I was a child. The songs are catchy and the dragon is adorable.

This was a favortie movie from when I was little, and I'm so glad that now my son, 6yrs old has the same love for it! It's a long movie and a musical and he still really enjoys it-even the slow songs! Love it!
