Album Notes Personnel includes: Minnie Riperton, Jose Feliciano, Peabo Bryson. Compilation producer: A. Sctt Galloway. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway. An excellent overview of Minnie Riperton's '70s work on the Epic and Capitol labels, PETALS is probably the best single-disc overview of the last half of the Chicago native's tragically shortened career. (The first half, with the Gems and Rotary Connection, is well-documented by the anthology HER CHESS YEARS.) Although Riperton is best remembered for her 1975 hit "Lovin' You," she released several fine albums over the decade, many produced by her mentor and former employer Stevie Wonder. Riperton's staggering multi-octave range is legendary, but what makes these songs so powerful is the control she exhibits; no Mariah or Whitney showboating here. Besides lush orchestrated ballads in the style of her hit, PETALS contains funky dance tracks and pop tunes, including duets with Wonder and Latin guitarist Jose Feliciano.
Editorial Reviews ...Includes a couple of great Windy City soul rarities. Ripperton was blessed with an astonishing range that spanned more than 5 octaves... Living Blues (05/01/2001)
