Jane Austen would be proud of this filming of her classic. Amanda Root becomes Anne Elliott! The cinematography is excellent. And the humor as well as romance comes through superbly.
This version followed the books storyline more closely, but it seemed to move so slowly. I liked the cast of the 2008 version with Sally Hawkins better than this version. The casting of the principle characters for this version is too old.
This has always been one of my favorite Jane Austen fairy tales. The acting in the one and the portrayal of the characters is excellent. I love the back ground--the interior of the houses, the outdoor scenery and the costumes are some of the prettiest of any of the Austen stories. I find the prejudices of the era fascinating and can watch this charming film over and over. These things add up to the best of the "Persuasion" Classics.
I love Jane Austen and I especially love her book Persuasion. This is a really excellecent movie. I can't say enough about it. It's great. I've wanted it for a long time and I got it at a great price. Way below the price for Critic's Video.
This is a wonderful love story. If you like Jane Austin's work you will enjoy this mix of comedy, broken hearts and a second chance at true love. I found watching the movie twice was the best way to get a good grip on the plot and players. Warning This Is A "GIRL FLICK". This is one of those you will want to own to enjoy viewing over and over again.
Having fallen in love with Keira Knightly version of Pride & Prejudice, I was leery of finding another of fine quality. This I would a 1 on film quality, 2 on story line. The leading lady in the film just didn't hit the mark all the time, while the male leading role was fine. Worth the watch!
This is a wonderful Romantic, English movie. For the first 20-30 min. you really do not think that it is going anywhere, but keep with it because it is worth it. This is a movie that you will want to add to your collection!
Had a very good seller. Received dvd in timely fashion. I love most of Jane Austen's work. Persuasion reminds me of a few families that put on airs to others when they're lives are dysfunctional! Good casting though. Always rooting for Ann Elliott to marry Capt Wentworth and I liked his family also..very down to earth. Really liked his friends in Lyme, Harpolds. Beautiful scenery. Always loved history, ocean, Navy..So to me...it made sense to buy it also because wanted to add on to my Jane Austen Collection.
One of my favorite recent Jane Austen-based movies. Subtle, quietly humorous and true to the story. I bought the dvd because I'd originally owned the vhs version, and am getting rid of vhs-based films. Too bulky.
I love this movie as I love all of Jane Austin's classics. I like that fact that they don't use drop dead gorgeous actors, just normal looking people. I love Anne's quiet, strong, mature character, much different from the silly, young character in Emma. I bought this because I was enhancing my DVD collection. This is a movie I will watch over and over again.
purchased as gift for daughter, who has novel. Loves both movie and bookxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I've worn out my VHS tape of this movie... now I have it on wonderful DVD. One that I watch over and over when in a Jane Austin mood. This film thuroughly delivers. Buy it, watch it, enjoy it. MR
I love this movie. There are so many takes on the Jane Austen books, i.e. "Clueless", but this one is one of the best. I rented it and watched it 3 times in 4 days. It is a fabulous movie with nothing distracting from the story line. Perfect for the "Period Piece" movie lover.
Amanda Root lacked appeal. Even after her youthful bloom was supposed to have come back...her lips were thin, and there was nothing very appealing about her face or demeaner that would help make you believe that two men found her so attractive. She looked afraid, worried and boring. Different casting for the character of Anne Elliot would have made it emensely more enjoyable and believable. However, the character of Capt. Wentworth, (Ciaran Hinds), good actor, perfectly agreeable looking man, striking even, just what the hero ought to be.
This is one of my favorite Jane Austen productions and a must for anyone who loved Emma and Sense and Sensibility. The title characters are expertly played and become more appealing as the story progresses, almost as if you can see them bloom as their past love blossoms again. Expert acting, beautiful locations, sympathetic and believable characters, a dedication to authenticity in wardrobe and styling, and storytelling with a delicate hand make this one of the best Austin adaptations in recent history.
A great Austen story, whether you are an Austen fan or not, you are sure to enjoy it. You can watch this one over and over and never tire of it. The scenery and music are add to the enjoyment. Amanda Root is superb.
