A producer of incongruous, shape-shifting digital grooves, Andreas Tilliander was initially at the forefront of the turn-of-the-millennium aesthetic movement known as "clicks-and-cuts." While early records under his own name such as LJUD (2001) and ELIT (2002) were marked by skittering, glitch-inflected beats that recalled the micromanaged funk of R&B producers like Timbaland, Tilliander soon established his Mokira alias to explore multi-layered ambient works in the vein of Gas and Tim Hecker. PERSONA, an album from 2009, is perhaps Tilliander's finest work. Steeped in mournful, plangent drones that fix like glaciers through a digital fog, the album moves deliberately and majestically, building momentum and introducing thematic elements as in an epic poem.
