Falling somewhere in between heavy metal and AOR, Rush were one of the success stories of the period from 1976 to 1986--all the more surprising because few Canadians manage to break out from the land of the maple leaf in this area of music. Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was a guitar hero with the technical ability of a Page or a Beck. Occasionally Neil Peart's lyrics leave a little to be desired: "the shifting shafts of shining, weave the fabric of their dreams . . ." Jon Anderson from Yes was afflicted with the same condition of pretentiolyricitus. That aside, the music is faultless.

      Excellent, and accessible prog!

Rush, rulers of the universe, unveiled this masterpiece to the world on New Year's Day in 1980. I wish I had been around to hear it while it was still fresh.

This album contains quite possibly the greatest Rush song ever, "Natural Science." That song alone justifies the purchase of this album. But this short album is loaded with great material, boasting classics such as "Freewill" and "Jacob's Ladder" on it's track list. "Different Strings" is also a nice breather of a track that is quite good on it's own. I'm kind of indifferent to "Entre Nous." It feels out of place amidst the great tracks surrounding it, and is just okay.

Geddy's Bass playing is, as always, amazing, and his voice is strong (or annoying for the nay-sayers). The keyboards are pretty simplistic on this album, but that's fine with me. Lifeson shines throughout with excellent solos and his wonderfully oddly-structured chords. Peart, well, he's a drum god.

I wish popular music were as good as Rush is on this album. An excellent introduction for non-fans.

Much deserving 5 out of 5.

This is a great album! It's a trip down memory lane for me, as we had this album in 'record' format when we were teenagers. Fun!

    Rock on eh. Ya...

What can I say? Rush is Rush...and Permanent Waves is one of their best offerings over the thirty odd years Rush has been making music! The lyrics on this one are sometimes so highly poetic that you have difficulty believing that this is hard, metal-type Rock, and yet the driving guitar rythmns and the fabulous vocals that knock your socks off remind you that it most certainly is!

Drummer Neil Peart is at his best with this one, sending the hard-driving rythmn through your entire body, while Geddy Lee soars above the sound to leave us in a pleasant state of shock. Alex lifeson's lyrics are almost too poetic for this music, but heck, who cares? The music is so great, you accept that and go with the flow! Lifeson's guitar is too wonderful to sweat the small stuff!

I bought this to add to my own collection of Rush, after 25 years of building the collections of three now-adult kids and two grandkids. I figured I owed myself a few great old albums, and Rush will always be one of my favorites.

If you are a Rush fan, Permanent Waves has GOT to be in your CD case!
